I think this is a nice scent in extremely small doses. Unfortunately, after I wear it awhile it gets on my nerves, and I'm not certain why. Be careful - it's cloyingly sweet and could end up making your teeth hurt. Youch.

  • ATALANTA04/12/2008

The perfume of Anais Nin and of the women of "the lost generation"... Of course, not for every day and not for every evening ! Exquisite, but not for teenagers ! Longlasting.

  • BRENDA12/02/2007

I too had searched for years for this. My Father had bought this for my Mother when he traveled about the world. This is a captivating scent. Everyone would ask me what I was wearing because of it's delicate and long lasting scent. Now I and my Mother are able to remember my Father when we wear it. He is gone now, but by wearing this we feel close to him again.

Scat play in a musty cellar during a heat wave. Smells like excrements, mold and rot. No offense to NN lovers but if you wear this, don't come near me.

  • SMELLIE KAT10/10/2007

Narcisse Noir must be deliberately invited into your space to be appreciated. It is not a casual, thoughtless "spritz" and one must be in the right frame of mind to truly understand its richness and elegance. I don't find it overpowering, but I do find it intriguing and moody. And it has a past, like any woman who has truly lived. It is sweet but smoky; innocent but sexual. Narcisse Noir does not suffer fools. It must be seduced and coaxed - given time - before it is free to unleash its charms.

  • NOSESOUP08/19/2007

It is beyond beautiful. Not an everyday scent for me, mainly because I'm afraid not everyone with which I'm in contact will "appreciate" the sweetness of narcissus flower. Instead, it has become a scent in which the sweetness and sensuality of narcissus envelope me in the way that I had tried (without luck--for me) to create with Chloe's narcissus fragrance. To me, it creates an extremely comforting state of mind--I wish I could drink it. While I appreciate Chloe's version, it is unwearable to me and causes me headaches, so I spray it in the bath, and very rarely. I adore Caron, so I'm not an impartial reviewer, but I would think if you love narcissus it is at the very least worth a try.

  • MARA08/18/2007

This fragrance has a depth to it that is rare to find in modern fragrances. It is a scent you would find on a senuous mature woman, not a girl. This is truly beautiful, but it should be worn on special occasions. This is not your teen-agers' perfume.

  • SCARLETT05/06/2007

Hi everyone, I've never tried the fragrance before,I love Shalimar,Samsara and L'Heure Bleue by Guerlain but also "darker" scents such as Opium and Youth Dew.Can anyone tell me ,please if I could possibly like Narcisse Noir? I know it's all down to personal taste and body chemistry but any help will be appreciated! Thanks!

  • HAPPILY HUNTING03/07/2007

Pungent opening, then could be nice powdery warm orange, but has persistant bitter medicinal note. (dried orange peels) 2 hrs later still too bitter. In love with other Carons so tried again.. light application better, but just don't like the feel- cold & cynical, more sharp than sweet. **who knows? by the time I use up my sample, another Caron may have won me over! I almost gave up on Aimez-moi, & now I like it alot.

  • SEAN03/06/2007

Another one by Caron that I don't like because it's bad, as if Nuit de Noel wasn't enough! With that said, I will say also that Narcisse Noir is similar to Tabu by Dana which can be had for a song at Walmart. The Tabu is better IMO.

  • POMPEIA02/14/2006

Dark and mysterious, Narcisse Noir will blossom on your skin with notes of sweet orange blossom, mandarin, narcissus, jasmine, musk and sandalwood.

  • LOUISE11/26/2005

try, try again. That's the key to an oldie but goodie like Narcisse Noir. You really need to give this more than one airing and wearing before you make up your mind. Let it cook for a while on your skin before you decide if it's right for you. A venerable vintage like NN deserves better than an opinion based on one quick whiff. Narcisse Noir is available both in EdT and in pure parfum. In my opinion, the pure parfum is worth the extra $$. It has an appealingly smooth darkness to it that is not readily detected in the EdT. The EdT is brighter, while I prefer the darkness of the parfum. That having been said, I'll add that this is some strong juice. Only a drop will suffice, trust me on that one. Heck, if it's good enough for Gloria Swanson (in Sunset Blvd), it'd good enough for me. Ready for your close-up, ladies? Apply some Narcisse Noir, and you will be!! Oh, baby.

beautiful black scent, aroma de magck. awesome. incredibly bleeding of the heart. wonderful.

  • MERMISS11/17/2004

Oh my, so unbelievably sweet to me. Like candy coated flowers. I'm sure someone can wear this and smell wonderful wearing it, but not me.

  • MORTICIA X.09/13/2004

I love dark, mysterious and old perfumes but this is no perfume at all. To me it's just bugspray.

  • EG08/02/2004

I love it too, and you can find it at the Caron Boutique in New York City, with all their other great fragrances.

For over 20 years I have searched for this memorable fragrance! My mother grew up in Randleman, North Carolina and always remembered the small back bottle of perfume Mr. Story would bring home to his wife after an international shopping trip (circa 1930). As a child, my mother would tell me how Mrs. Story would enter the grand ballroom, the faint fragrance of Black Narcissus wafting in the air. Mother is now 81 and I'm 38---and my search for the elusive perfume has ended. (I should have known to use the French spelling!) I have asked at Nieman Marcus, Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Belk's----but it was finally at Saks 5th Avenue that a helpful clerk suggested I search the internet for the maker of this unique scent. My mother, who is now in the clutches of Alzheimer's, has recognized this scent---which has once again provided me with the wonderful stories of her youth. The small black bottle with the white, flower-shaped stopper may be gone---but the memories this fragrance has brought back to my mother has been well worth the search. Thank goodness for the internet and on-line stores like this one!

  • SANDRA06/06/2004

Well, I'm 38, European, educated and still hate it! Come on, being offensive because someone hates a perfume that you like is at least rude. A perfume is a very personal thing. The reviews are about rating the PERFUMES not offending the people who freely express their opinions! Work it out with some therapist!

  • ELISHA04/26/2004

Just because she disagrees with your opinion about Caron's Narcisse Noir that does not mean that she is lacking in intelligence as you imply. Fragrance is a subjective thing and if she dislikes the scent then she dislikes it. I would also like to let you know that I am 25 years old and LOVE this scent, age has nothing to do it.

  • MGARIS03/20/2004

A Caron fragrance is like a Saint Laurent dress (one designed by the REAL, Yves Saint Laurent, and not by his 'replacements.') My all time favorite perfume is Fleurs de Rocaille. (Original version.) Narcisse Noir is fabulous, too. It's altogether bewitching . . . sweetness, set off by warmth. Unique. I tell all the women I know . . . try the old classics, before you buy anything else. Another, exquisite scent: Jolie Madame, by Balmain.

  • SUZANNE03/10/2004

I find it interesting that people like "Karen", who don't appreciate a lovely, haunting fragrance such as Narcisse Noir, also can't spell or use proper punctuation. I guess it takes a certain amount of native intelligence to really appreciate a fine fragrance. Or else Karen is in her 20's and therefore too young to know better.

  • SALI01/24/2004

Narcisse Noir is the ultimate weapon of seduction. Sweet, heady narcissus on a hot bed of sandalwood, a perfume of the highest quality by the venerable French house of Caron, Narcisse Noir is the one that immortalized the Caron name and it's a perfume fit for a queen. I also love Narcisse Blanc which is similar to Narcisse Noir without the sandalwood base (only available at Caron from their famous urn).

  • KAREN01/17/2004

its too boring and over bearing

  • SYLVIA11/21/2003

Have been a "perfume fanatic" for many years, but have never smelled any fragrance as totally lovely as Narcisse Noir! A Masterpiece! Amazing that a perfume nearly a century old is still unique and precious...think of all the women over all those years who have loved it too.

  • MAD MAGGIE09/21/2003

I have a collection of over 1,500 perfumes, this is one of a handful I actually wear. Like narcissus and incense. a pure floral is never out of style, and for a 90+ year old scent, it is a testimony to elegance.

  • CLAUDIE08/23/2003

Another great scent from Caron...your story on it was charming and reminded me of it again, Joycelyn B. Thanks for sharing with us. While it is not for everyone, it can be a very sultry and exciting scent on some. I love it, and recommend at least a trial if you have never worn it. The top notes of orange blossom and narcissus are so beautiful; it even dries down well.

  • AUTUMN05/23/2003

Narcisse Noir always reminds me of Gloria Swanson in "Sunset Boulevard" when she makes her way down that long stairway for her close-up. I believe the perfume was also used as a prop on her dressing table in the film. It's very worthy of film-star 1920's quality!

  • NELLY11/22/2002

Is my favorite for the last 25 years and is difficult to find in Puerto Rico. My last bottle is the 1978 and I purshase Virgin Island. Than you, Nelly

  • RUBY08/20/2002

Lovely true to scent orange blossom fragrance on top of vetiver and sandlewood. It's strong and sweet when it goes on and warm and subtle and complex when it wears down, still smelling slightly of orange blossom though (along with the vetiver and sandlewood more at the end.) This is one of the best.

  • JOYCELYN BAKER06/06/2002

I, too, have chosen this frangrance because it was one that my Father initially got for my Mom years ago as he traveled the world. For years after he was gone and she longed to have it again, I found this site and was elated to find it here. She was so surprised when it came to her in the mail. I find her today trying to "save" it and finally got her to use it because we now can get it with no problem. It did take me a while to find it, but it was worth the wait. After he left us, I had searched for years to find it for her and all the sources that I had used no longer had it. She and I are so delighted to have it back with us....it is the scent of angels....thanks for listening

  • JACQUELINE GREER05/19/2002

I have only to close my eyes, think of my mother and recall the essence of both my mother and the fragrance that I was sure was hers alone, Narcisse Noir, which was her favorite fragrance for over 40 years. I don't know how she initially discovered this unique fragrance, except that she loved anything 'French,' excelling in the language, giving me a 'French' name, and the very 'French' fragrance of Caron. It must have been my father's favorite on her as well because he bought her a one ounce bottle of the 'real perfume' at least once a year for her birthday and sometimes for their anniversary. The bottle was so beautiful with the 'black narcissus' stopper. I wish she had saved all those empty flacons, but people weren't so interested in empty bottles back then. It was only what was inside that mattered. (Kind of like people). When my mother passed away two years ago, it was my task to go through her things and I found one empty half ounce bottle in the original black and white box in her lingerie drawer. All I had to do was remove the stopper and the fragrance that wafted to my nose brought so many memories of my loving parents back to me in that one moment. I never wore Narcisse Noir myself, because as I said, it was my mother's fragrance, but now that she is gone, and I found it still available through your company, it will become mine. Everyone, including Nordstrom's, told me it was discontinued, so you can't know how happy I was to discover it again.

  • TRACEY K.05/10/2002

oh, i love this fragrance. Unusual and sexy.

  • MIRANDA01/08/2002

This fragrance is one my mother in law has worn for 40 years. She discovered it on a trip to France just after WWII. It is a light floral with a slight spicy note- very classy. Not wanting to wear the same fragrance as my MIL, I recently bought another Caron fragrance, Aimez Moi. They are both distincly French fragrances. I love them both. They are definitely not "mainstream" and you can't find them on the counter, even at Nordstrom. I like the uniqueness of these beautiful fragrances.
