  • ADRIANA CASANOVA06/21/2016

The best perfume on the planet

  • ADRIANA05/20/2016

I have worn this perfume for 40 years There is no better fragrance in the world

  • JOY02/08/2014

I was 14years old when my brother went to france and brought me a sample of joy home ... I have used it ever since I am now 73 years old and use it every day at my age I say don't use it just at weekends you may as well feel good every day I also have the hand and body lotion my husband loves the aroma ...

  • VIRGINIA04/27/2011

I have been using Joy Perfum since 1968 and I have found no other perfum to equal this wonderful scent. I always get comments about it wherever I go. I am 73 years old and I will continue to use Joy. Nothing can take its place in my opinion

  • MARY06/13/2010

I loved Joy as a little girl. My aunt always wore it and she seemed so sophisticated. I bought a bottle in France in 1984 and it was perfect - just as I remembered it. A couple of days ago, I bought my second bottle ever in Niemen Marcus, SF, and I am SO disappointed I could cry. It smells completely different to what I remember - it's just another perfume now plus it's got a nasty "dungy" underlayer - I can't even find the signature scent of tuberroses. This was a splurge to celebrate one year of being cancer free - what a total disappointment and a waste of $150! To whom can we complain about this?

  • SUE01/28/2010

Does anyone know when P&G took over? When I am back in my home country UK I think I would love to talk to their Parfum ? dept. Of course certain products for the sake of animals cannot be used but look what can be done in a clinic, tell me noone can reproduce say civet? Thank you for reading

  • GINI12/14/2009

I was given my first bottle of Joy when I was 25 years old. The older I get the more I love it. I am now 71 years old and I still wear Joy. It is almost impossible to find in the stores but thank goodness for computers I can now buy it without leaving home. Even at 71 I feel sexy when I wear it and my husband loves it.

  • SHANNON11/25/2009

I am 54 years old and have tried Joy over the years, but it never felt right for me. I just tried it again the other day and wow - I loved it. I purchased a bottle and have been in perfume bliss every since. I think, for me at least, I needed a level of maturity to appreciate Joy. I also believe hormonal changes have made a difference in the way a scent wears on my skin. Whatever, the reason, I'm glad I gave it another try - I love it!

  • LOUISA LUCIE-SMITH11/05/2009

Since I was 16, in 1971, I have only worn JOY. Yes, it has changed and I would like to know if on my forays to Paris, there is a reputable seller of what may still be the last of the real thing. Comments welcome. My happiness depends on it.

  • JANELLE10/07/2009

I love joy parfum, It makes me feel so very good, lasts long all day. husband loves it, as well as everyone that comes in contact with me, comments are-you always smell so good.

  • JANET FADELEY10/05/2009

I started wearing Joy Perfume 25 years. I do agree - you must be a classy lady to carry this off, and appreciate the finer things in life.I love it, but not for some younger ones . body chemestry has some to do with it Tis perfume was made for me, sometimes I mix Joy and chanel NO.5 together. 2 classics together Wow!!!!. Drives my husband wild. Don't knock classic perfumes cause you don't like them, I personally would not wear the new perfumes- most of them last but an hour, Joy Parfum lasts more than 14 hrs. I rate it 5 stars.

  • JOY06/09/2009

when I was 23 years old, I travelled in an elevator with an older classic woman wearing this frangrance. I was intoxicated with it, I felt like following her I loved the smell so much. Before she got off, I complimented her perfume and asked the name. "Joy" she said in a sultry voice as she walked off. She just said my name! I walked over to the perfume counter and bought my first bottle, that's all I ever wear now 30+ years later. My namesake and favorite perfume ever!

  • AM05/30/2009

~Oh my goodness - I caught it! I sprayed the edt on my wrist and went about my business. After about an hour, I smelled my wrist and Ohhhhhhh - the beauty of this ESPECIALLY in the sultry summer breeze is seeringly beautiful! I've been missing this for how long now??!!! A joyously passionate floral that trails the scent of a classy and complex woman ....

  • MARSHA04/30/2009

I received this scent from my husband-to-be to wear on my wedding day and it will be forever a very special scent for me. BTW, I married at 20 - old lady perfume? I think not! Maybe only sophisticated young women need apply (it). ')

  • PATRICE03/06/2009

My first trip to Paris in 1974 is when I was introduced to Joy parfum. The smell was undeniably one of the finest aromatic scents I had ever experienced in my life. It has and still is Paris's signature love story fragrance and mine as well! Oh! So good on the skin no fabric or jewels can compete.

  • DAMALIAS01/25/2009

I received Joy parfum for my birthday. It is the same Joy I remember from my childhood, my mother's signature scent. As she grew older and more frugal, she switched to the EDP, which I did not love. The Joy I have today is the same rich, complex floral I remember from my youth. Perhaps the ingredients have been altered to comply with new European standards and to please the accountants, but the fragrance is unaltered. Maybe those who claim it's been ruined don't remember the real stuff. This is great and worth every penny. Don't skimp on the weaker formulations. Buy the pure parfum. You won't regret it.

  • ANNA MARIE09/23/2008

I now understand why it is named JOY - like true joy in life, it is like nothing else and not found by many in this life. This scent is for that very special woman who is not just happy but who has found her joy!

  • WOODY PERFUME EXPERT04/28/2008

What people fail to understand is that the essential oils from flowers change each season from climatic conditions. I buy Rose Oil from the same factory in Bulgaria using the same Flower crop but each year it smells different. A good perfumer would notice this change and adjust the oil ratio to compensate. I make Joy in an Almond oil base, smells the same as original Joy.

  • SHANE03/28/2008

I was intrigued by your comments Elisha regarding similarities between 'JOY', The 'GUERLAINS' and 'PALOMA PICASSO'. To mention a few. I have been augmenting my mothers fragrance cache for most of my adult life, an exercise in devotional trial and error. One of my first presentations to her was a 1fl oz.Parfum flacon of Joy. Several years later I was informed that it had been applied to the filter in the air-con unit in my parents bedroom. I was amused to say the least, it just didn't suit my Mom's skin acid mantle. 'Joy' is a very complex creation and was/is made from hundreds of predominately natural substances. At the time aldehyde's were quite novel and extensively used in perfumery. There is a distinct possibility that Joy and it's high end counterparts are now being re-formulated today due to both the rarity and scarcity of these natural ingredients. The floral absolutes and plant essences seem to be in ample supply, many of the other elements such as fixatives, musks, ferns, mosses, woods and animal derivatives including ambergris and civet are now either unavailable or banned from commercial use. 'Joy' is a divine fragrance and will remain a testament to the art of the Haute Perfumers. One of my Mom's favorites for many years is Mon Parfum by Paloma Picasso, I've just gone out on a limb and purchased her Patou 1000 for a change. They are both chypre-florals so I will keep my fingers crossed. Regards to all. . . . .

  • BLONDIE02/06/2008

Everyone on this board needs to buy the new book by Chandler Burr the fragrance critic for the NY Times, called "The Perfect Scent". It explains what has happened to alot of these old perfumes and it is not a pretty picture. Most of the old ones have long been purchased by P&G, or some other large fragrance conglomerate. Almost none of the original designers own the rights to their own names. Many had nothing to do with the creation of the scent other than to submit a statement of what they wanted then it is chosen by committee. The ugly truth is that when Patou sold out to Proctor and Gamble they lost all control of the formulae for any of thier scents and there is no way to tell what has been done to this one. I can tell you I've worn it since the 70's and it has definitely changed. My guess is the quality of the jasmine and the roses has in some way been compromised. The price has certainly not been lowered. There are only a few houses left with control and autonomy and one of those is Chanel. Guerlain has some control I think but they are owned by LVMH. If you want the same unchanged scents, go with anything by Chanel. Almost anything else except Creed is a risk.

  • LUCYINTHESKY09/25/2007

Just bought Joy parfum in St. Thomas and it is NOT the parfum oil I remember. Definately more alcohol. Does ANYONE know where I can buy the original uncut parfum oil. I had some in a black flaconette, but what they sell in that container now is the same as in the 1/2oz glass bottle I bought in STT. I will send to France. HELP!

  • MS JOHNNIE KEETON09/18/2007

Why did they have to ruin a perfectly wonderful fragrance? If it's not broken, don't mess with it! Will the original formula ever return?

  • PAMELA 08/30/2007

Yes, I too, have noticed a real change in Joy perfume. I have used it for years and thought that my nose had changed. I now realize that other wearers have noticed it, too. Can you buy the original in France? Or, are we stuck with this imitation?

  • LIZ W08/02/2007

Is the new formula as bad in all of the varieties? If I got it in EDP, would it smell more like the old Joy or less? Thanks.

  • GREEKGIRL07/26/2007

each time i have tried the Joy edt(kept thinking it will smell better next time) i kept getting this awful smell of dead flowers in old water, mind you i did try it on tester strips, dont know how it would smell on skin (too scared to try) also never tried parfum or edp, it must have changed for the worse since theres a lot of positive posts have to try and track down the parfum and see if thats any different, keep you posted.

  • GLORIABENNETT07/11/2007

I bought Joy 9 years ago & loved it but after reading the reviews I am afrade to buy again. What happened? Why did it change? Too bad.

  • MARY JO MAGNASCO05/23/2007

To all of you who "question" whether the formula of JOY has changed, rest assured it has changed. It has a chemical smell on the skin. They lie about the change and get away with it by saying the formula is the same, e. e., the flowers. They are right about that. What has changed is they add chemicals to make the fragrance in place of Whale oil that is now illegal. While I am happy they are not killing the whales, they should admit this and find a more natural alternative that doesn't harm life, but delivers the same, unbeatable, exquisite fragrance that it used to be several years ago.

  • EMILEN05/04/2007

I am looking for something lighter for summer and I bought a small bottle of Joy. I love the scent, and it lasts all day on me, but I don't see myself wearing it that often. It is lovely, but a little too delicate and romantic for me.

  • JUDI W*04/05/2007

When I was young, I remember seeing this on my older sister's dresser. I would secretly sniff all her perfumes when she wasn't home. I remember this one, and that this was a flowery type scent, very feminine, and too sophisticated for me at the time. She loved it then & still does. She can pull it off better than me, I'm not into this kind of fragrance, but I can appreciate the quality it has, that makes it top notch.

  • BLONDIE03/07/2007

I have experienced the same thing exactly. It is tragic that this glorious scent should have changed this way. I am convinced it has been altered no matter what they say. I speak from over 30 years with this scent. I could cry.

  • MARY ALICE03/06/2007

I wore this years ago when I could first begin to afford the luxury of owning it and it was glorious. I tried it again recently and was so disappointed. There is an artificial note in it now that resembles the original fragrance but turns bitter on my skin over time. It's just the one note and it is present through-out the drydown on my skin...the other fragrance components seem to be as I remembered. I am actually paying less for Joy now than when I first purchased it in 1985. I'd gladly pay more to have my glamorous old friend back.

  • SUE C02/22/2007

I love this perfume and bought a bottle of the edt in 1990, but I haven't tried it lately, I know the packaging has been changed lately. It's very annoying if they do change the formula when there are so many loyal users, it's an insult to our intelligence if the manufacturers are cost cutting. If your bottle does not spray properly, you should take it back to the place where you bought it (or post it back) for a replacement as you do not have to tolerate faulty workmanship especially at such high prices. They will keep making faulty products if no one complains.

  • JULIETTE12/12/2006

An almost perfect scent. I have worn it for many years. One of the top five fragrances in the world...a rich, intense floral. With many dozen roses in every ounce and thousands of jasmine flowers...how could it not be feminine?

  • CATHWYN10/01/2006

I agree with Gala - the perfume seems to have changed - plus the fact that the last three bottles of Jean Patou, 2 joy, 1 Enjoy, have been very easily broken at the spray, resulting in not being able to extract the perfume of course without destroying the bottle. Has anyone else had this problem as well. It's a great great shame that the product seems to have been downgraded in the takeover when it was such a good one. Manufacturer take note!!!

  • JJ08/29/2006

I was given my first bottle of parfum by a business associate when I was 32...I have been wearing Joy ever since. I wear EDT for bummin' around and parfum for work and social events. I spray clothes &/or hair so my chemistry doesn't change the scent. It is a captivating scent - men and women of all ages compliment me...so it isn't for old women and it doesn't smell like bad part of a NY subway! It is just FABU-lous!!

  • LS06/27/2006

I never thought fragrance had to be for a certain age. If you like it, wear it! The "old lady" comments are indeed disrespectful, and I'm not old yet.

  • BOMBSHELL IN THE CITY05/09/2006

After years & years of wanting a bottle for myself, I got my very own bottle of Joy EDP in March '06. I think the combination of May Roses & Jasmine is the ultimate in romantic. & When on, its other ingredients balance the florals out so it doesn't smell too innocent. I think it's quite sexy, actually.

  • JR05/01/2006

I wanted so much to like this classic, but to my nose (maybe it's the aldehydes), it smells like a dank public men's room (or the depths of the New York subway) in the height of summer. (A friend of mine with a sophisticated nose had the same reaction.) I know that civet is animalic -- I like civet, and I love lots of vintage fragrances -- but this is just foul. I tried the EDT; perhaps the perfume is better?

  • CHARLOTTE04/01/2006

I am a long time user of Joy, and yes, I do agree that it has changed. Sadly, it is not exactly as I remember, though I thought at first it was just my chemistry changing or something. I don't know about the vintage Joy on e-bay. I have bought it on e-bay recently but it was the new version. For me, the change is not intolerable, just not the same wonderful memory making scent that I remember. I would love to try a vingtage bottle some time. The last bottle I bought in a dept. store was older, from France, and the scent was unchanged. I wish whatever the have done, they would undo it. If you buy a vintage bottle, let me know how it is.

  • CLASSY LADY12/29/2005

My mother wore Joy, I've loved it for that reason because it brings her memory back, and my husband of 40 years has given me a selection of the Joy parfum (not EDT) every Christmas, although it's getting more difficult to find.

  • EMERY ANN12/28/2005

Many reviewers claim so. I disagree. Joy is not too strong. If you are accustomed to wearing EDT or cologne that dissipate after an hour, perhaps you are used to slathering yourself in scent, in which case Joy would certainly seem too strong, but it's only because you've put too much on. Joy is very concentrated, so a tiny bit will stay with you and over the course of the day different notes will diffuse out over your skin. It is expensive (claimed as the most expensive perfume per ounce), but it's a sophisticated elegant scent and if you know how to wear good pefume, one bottle will last you years.

  • GALA12/23/2005

I purchased my first bottle of Joy in '93, at that time it was still made in France and Jean Patou had not been bought out by P+G. I used it up long ago, but my memory of its scent remains...and it was far superior to the Made in UK P+G bottle I have now. This cannot be a body chemistry issue, as it smells inferior to my memories with the first spray, and in the air. But Luca Turin, with his much-lauded nose, claims that there has been no such change (which makes me suspicious of him, in general). Are there any long-time Joy users out there who have also noticed this degradation of Joy, and can post here confirming my belief?.....so I can bid on vintage Joy on ebay in confidence that the change is in Joy, and not in my nose? Thanks, would be much appreciated.

  • MARY ALEXANDER12/09/2005

Pls.a favorite for 20 yrs. Please can you help me? (New gentleman I am finally interested in after 10 yrs. of widowhood. (I still look good according to him-but I really think the Joy helps-thank you so much! I can't wait to feel goog again. You're the best!

  • BONNIE12/01/2005

I've been debating purchasing a new bottle of Joy, but these comments have me hesitating since my experience was somewhat similar and I was wondering what was wrong. My first experience of Joy was with a tiny bottle of the real perfume and it lingered in my memory for years. When I finally got around to investing in a new bottle of perfume I was crushed. It didn't smell at all the same as I remembered. It was weak and cheapy sweet. I haven't purchased a bottle since. So how DOES one find out about formula changes? My first bottle was about 20 years ago. It was all the soft characteristics, but it did not fade or twist into strange smells. It was incredible because it was soft, held its floral tones, and by that I mean it remained true; strong without being overpowering, garden sweet without being sappy. Help!

  • PHILLIPA10/18/2005

Just bought some of this and I love it! At first it is strong and fruity, then it dries to a "fruitcakey" aroma reminiscent of baking cinnamon buns, sugar and spices. Lovely and unusual.

  • ANNA06/19/2005

This smelled very weak on me when I tried it on. For such an expensive perfume I was expecting a much stronger impression. I detected the scents of jasmine and roses, but they faded quickly.

  • CLAUDIA T.05/13/2005

Gorgeous, divine, heavenly. This luxurious and very feminine scent used to fill every meaning of these words in my memory. And I should always remember that very blissful moment when I first smelled this scent. But I agree with some of you here, this perfume is no longer long lasting and the dry down has become very awful ~~I hate the new formula and it is very sad to see a prestigious brand’s descent. But, for the truly very original Joy, it is peerlessly beautiful~

  • JANICE05/12/2005

My mother used to love this scent, but it made me sick when she wore it. It's so sweet it gives me a headache. I think "old lady" when I smell this. I can see women liking it, but it's nothing that will drive a man wild. Ick.

  • DELPHINE05/08/2005

As a gift recently I received a bottle of the Joy EDP. Stinko. This is a fresh bottle, too, in the new packaging, so my theory is that P&G has changed the formula. Do you know what the drydown smells like? Mr. Clean. No kidding. It's so weird. I have some EDT in the newer P&G packaging (and newer formulation???) and while it's not as great as it should be, it doesn't have that Mr Clean-ammonia drydown smell, either. I'm pretty disgusted because I know my husband paid about $70.00 dollars for this bottle of EDP. If I want to smell like ammonia, there are cheaper ways to do it.!!!

  • ANA C04/22/2005

I have three bottles of Joy EDT. They each smell a bit different. I don't understand that, unless P&G doesn't have good quality control over their Jean Patou fragrances. One bottle (splash) smells as it should. Another bottle (spray) has a strange undertone, almost like fingernail polish. It tends to disappear as time goes on. The third bottle (another EDT spray) is okay, but has a floral undertone that reminds me a bit of Estee Lauder's Beyond Paradise. I'm not saying this third bottle of Joy smells like Beyond Paradise, but there's a note in it that is reminiscent of the other fragrance. This undertone tends to wear off after a time, but not completely. Is anyone else having this same experience with Joy---one bottle a bit different from another? Thanks. I'm debating on whether or not I should give up on Joy after these bottles are empty.

  • LOUISE03/22/2005

Old smelling? Hardly. It's surprisingly fresh and modern, as if it were introduced just yesterday. I can see where an aldehydic fragrance MIGHT be accused of smelling "old," but Joy? No way. It's fresh; it's timeless; it's a truly joyful scent. Some of you young whipper-snappers may like your fragrances to have a drydown that smells like a man's cheap aftershave (read: Angel or Lolita Lempicka). And unisex scents are just as bad. Ladies, we're women. So let's smell feminine. And Joy is definitely a feminine fragrance. I like Sharrie's post---Joy to the world. Floral, ageless, timeless, enthusiastic, fabulous, confident. That's Joy.

  • KASEY03/18/2005

I've been looking for a scent like this for a while -- it is wonderful and reminds me of a summer morning in the rose garden -- I'm in my early 30's and don't find this too old a scent at all -- may be a young less sophiscated girl may find it too old though -- but may be what they say is true -- youth is wasted on the young =)

  • KAREN03/18/2005

This is the fragrance I love above all others... I'm surprised some think it's a older woman's fragrance -- you're never too young to smell this great... it reminds me of warm summer morning in a rose garden -- WONDERFUL!

  • BEBE03/09/2005

missing notes like jasmine. underrated. awesome. very nice

  • B EBE02/07/2005

brings the joy of life. joy is ageless. awesome. inspirational floral sanctuary. wow

  • IVYINQUESTION01/25/2005

used to love Joy-smelled like fresh rose.Lately it seems watered down or something;has no umph or staying power anymore.(even the full-strength perfume)What's happened?

  • MARGARET12/30/2004

I have Enjoy. My boyfriend brought it to me from Paris. I'd asked him to get me Joy, but since the "en" is faded behind the "joy" on the bottle, he thought...well, you get the drift. Anyway, I didn't have the heart to tell him it was the wrong fragrance. I do like it. It's complex, has depth; it's heady, the florals balanced by a darker, vanilla-ish muskiness. I tend to go for single notes, rose or vanilla, but finding those in a form that's not overly sweet it hard. I am now wearly only the Enjoy, and love it.

  • SHARRIE12/21/2004

Joy to the world. the most beautiful of the patou. amazing. laying in a bed of flowers. wonderful.

  • NICO12/20/2004

Old "is" elegant. In fact I find Angel of Thierry Mugler one of the worst things ever appeared on the perfume market, it really makes me sick and I've always wondered who could wear it. De gustibus (Tastes are tastes)....

  • SHARRIE12/06/2004

powerful blend of wonderful scents, it rules the space and tme. heavenly an angels touch. when in the mood for floral this is it.

  • MARIA HONDA10/18/2004

Beware! Joy is now made by P&G and they have changed this fragrance..It does not have the same staying power, and honestly it is not worth your hard earned cash.

  • CONNY09/28/2004

it's realy a very old scense try angel by thiery mugler it's the best a stylish young perfum you don't live in the past

  • KATIE09/13/2004

I am 18 years old and I occasionally wear Joy when I want to feel pretty and mature. I agree this is NOT a scent for the immature, or anyone who has a thing for sugary sweet or unisex perfumes. Joy was created for elegant WOMEN. It's a fabulous perfume to wear when you want to feel feminine and put together. It's a perfume that says "I am beautiful and deserve respect."

  • CHRIS09/01/2004

I agree, Joy is a complex scent and really shouldn't be considered an Old Lady scent at all. It's a gorgeous rose and jasmine scent. It doesn't smell like potpourri whatsoever. It's a scent that will have continued longevity longer than the likes of most scents like Happy and Tommy Girl. It's a sparkling example that something from nature, A Rose, can be composed with jasmine and make a medley of pure bliss, IMO. I'm a fan of this stuff and have given my mom some of this stuff in lotion and solid form . I think the next step is get her some of the parfum or EDP. I think she will love it. This is what an intelligent, wellread, confident woman should wear. Just my opinion but definitely true in my book.

  • NIKOLA08/25/2004

Joy on my skin smells like those rose scented drawer liners, combined with old flower water. I think its more suited to an older woman in her 60's. Its not a sexy perfume at all. And finding out its one of the most expensive perfumes in the world..all that effort for an average product, which would be better used in potpourri.

  • NAT07/22/2004

the key is to use it very sparingly as its extremely concentrated. I dont like the way it smells at once, but the day after, if you spray it on your clothes, its lovely and fresh..

  • SARAH GRIFFITH06/25/2004

SINCE I HAD TO SCRAPE TOGETHER MY PENNIES TO AFFORD IT, I HAVE LOVED JOY. NOW, THAT I CAN AFFORD IT, IT MAKES ME FEEL THE MOST SPECIAL, SEXIEST AND TOTALLY LUXURIOUS PERSON ON EARTH. THAT IS ABOUT 30 YEARS OF PLEASURE.

  • PIA05/02/2004

i was given a bar of Joy soap a few years ago. It was prettily packaged etc... but the scent is bad, rancid , old. I put in basement by the sink so as not to throw it out. Kept it for a few months than threw it out. My husband wouldn't even use it to wash his hands after working in the yard and on his motorcycles he said it was awful. Sorry, no offense to you Joy lovers.

  • PATTY A. SOULARDE04/18/2004

I agree 100% with Elizabeth Sharon. As an Avon lady I have a lot of know how on fragrances. Joy is right up there with the best...Fracas, Poison Tender, and Perceive are a few other greats I advise my followers.

  • ELIZABETH SHARON04/04/2004

I just read Elisha's post about Joy, and the sort of darkness--I agree. On me it smells kind of llike honey, which get really enticing after a few hours. (If you think it's old ladyish, girls, just think of using it in "certain" areas when some complexity develops!) I also love L'Heure Bleu--That was my very first "real" perfume, that I borrowed from my Grandmother, who liked her Shalimar more. I do like most of Guerlain's scents--I think they are also wonderfully complex, and can change from smelling like Granma's cookies to a sexy sensual smell.

  • ELIZABETH SHARON04/04/2004

As I just posted in a comment on Fracas, Joy is one of the first "real" perfumes I ever owned. It was bought for me by a boyfriend who was trying to get on my good side. Initially I didn't like it--I thought it smelled sickeningly sweet. But after I had worn it on my skin for a while (the perfume--I think very often the perfume only really develops the true complexity of great scents) I started to keep smelling my own wrist, and liked it more and more as time went on. You won't find that happening with cheaper scents-- they may just have a heavy smell or fade away completely quite quickly. I think, too, that very many younger women who have mostly used fragrances in "eau de ..." form or light versions have not really given these great old, complex, authentic essence perfumes a chance. I think, too, that the practice of "layering" can be so overwhelming that all one smells is one note very loudly, instead of smelling how the individual's body oils mix with the perfume. Also, I have experienced, unfortunately, that even a wonderful perfume like Joy will "turn" and smell sickening if it gets old.

  • LUCY03/30/2004

this perfume is definitely not for everyone. I love Joy, but it's "rosy" smell makes my sister puke, literally. So, I never wear it around her!

  • DEFIANT03/25/2004

Joy is not what you wear to your Yoga class, or to lunch with the girlfiends, it (to me) should be worn with a special person, event, or, if you are unique enough, you can wear it every day..! It takes a SPECIAL women to carry the feeling of that scent...and, hopefully, to be appreciated by a special man...(who will buy it for you !)

  • HUTCHIE03/19/2004

Joy is a very natural scent. It is anathema to scents like Opium or Poison. I HATE those. And for 'young' scents... jeez, just squirt lemon juice behind your ears if you really want to avoid class. Joy is for complex women, not airheads (lemonheads?).

  • SUE C02/22/2004

So many people refer to timeless classic perfumes as 'old lady' scents. This probably means that it does not suit your personality, age or skin type and that you have not developed a sophisticated nose and knowledge of fragrances which takes years of experience. You will if you keep learning. If you are wearing a fragrance that does not suit your personality or the occasion you will smell perverse and feel very uncomfortable and the scent will not flatter you or project your inner qualities. Keep experimenting and educate yourself. Read about the history and technical development of perfumes. Joy is one of the enduring classics that is very sophisticated and requires poise and elegance to carry it off. Keep it for parties, evenings and dramatic colours. The over 25's wear it beautifully, it is very womanly and luxurious.

  • JONATHAN02/16/2004

JOY PARFUM IS THE WORLDS SEXIEST PARFUM A WOMAN CAN USE. I BOUGHT A VERY EXPENSIVE BOTTLE OF THE PURE PARFUM FOR MY GF THIS HOLIDAY AND SHE HAS BEEEN LOVING IT SINCE, ITS ELEGANT AND SIMPLE, NOT FRUITY OR OVER THE TOP --FOR THOSE THAT THINK IT STINKS YOU MUST ALL HATE FLOWERS AND FEMEININE SMELLS! JOY IS A GREAT GIFT GUYS, TO GIVE YOUR WIFE

  • LILLI02/10/2004

This frangrance will make you smile, the smell is wild, happy just as the name implies. Makes you feel sensuous, sneaky, flirty, young

  • ELISHA01/24/2004

I have finally tried joy and i have to say that I LOVE it. Lola I completely agree with you about joy. It starts of like a very ladylike scent but then when it it comes to the dry down wow!!! I also get that dark scent in a good way aspect that you decribed. I am also happy that this one works for my chemistry because usually florals do not work well with my skin.

  • MURKI01/22/2004

Girls, please don't make uneducated comments about older women, it's tacky. Just because a scent doesn't smell good on you, it doesn't mean it's for old women. I can see you identify older scents with older women, but that doesn't mean they smell bad. What if an older lady wore tommygirl, would anyone wearing that smell like an old lady? You'll be old one day, so don't be disrespectful..

  • ELISHA01/13/2004

I have tried Jean Patou's new scent called enjoy. I was told by a fragrance manager that it is supposed to be an updated version of Joy. This one is a little fruity and green and on me the dry down is musky but not too musky which is really nice. It is fruity without being like the clones of the other quite boring scents that are out there like Ralph, tommygirl, and others. I like this one even though I usually go for the ones that have some vanilla in the mix or are more complex. I usually wear shalimar samsara or l'heure bleue. i really love the Guerlain scentsI also wear paloma picasso and sisley's eau du soir. I would really love to hear form others that have tried this fragrance

  • SHIRL01/10/2004

just a little body cream after your bath or shower and it is heaven. do not count on getting much sleep if you wear it to bed.

  • PAT12/29/2003

    For me it's perfect

  • CONNY12/05/2003

I don' t like joy. It's a parfum for very old woman. It's the worst i have ever smell.all my friends thinks so about it.very cheap. It has no style.

  • STEPHANIE12/01/2003

It sets the mood for a romantic evening by the fire or a special occasion. My husband loves it and has been buying it for me since we first met 40 years ago! I wear it only in the winter time as I prefer a lighter citrus perfume such as Royal Lyme in the summer.

  • CHRISSY11/22/2003

I finally smelled Joy myself also and I am not all that impressed. I know people that love it and it makes a great gift for the Joy lover. But its not for me. It has an almost sour or rancid smell to me. But as we all know to each her own right?

  • ALHANA11/13/2003

I was very excited to try Joy, since I'd heard many good things about it. But the second I put it on my skin I felt about 50 years older. This is old lady perfume to the max! Also, it is very strong, and I spent about ten minutes trying to remove the scent from my skin, and even then it lingered for hours. This is one of the grossest fragrances I've ever smelled.

  • KBN07/04/2003

I love this fragrance; I would have to say it's my choice when I want an elegant, classy and mature scent. I would describe Fracas the same way but I prefer Joy over Fracas (for some reason it annoys me).

  • PAM06/28/2003

Just came back from testing Joy. I sprayed it and thought "Oh yes, This takes me back to 1969!". Then it dried down to something AWFUL! Why did they change it???

  • JOY05/27/2003

Flowery....I just received the EDT. It is very floral....and yet after a little while, the fragrance was gone...I think they 'modernized' the EDT as they say for the modern woman; that may account for the disappearance..........

  • LILITH05/24/2003

I always thought the person who named this perfume really missed the boat: Its scent is sneaky, erotic, evokes the scent of naked skin and forbidden touching... It's so weird, how the name and packaging imply "ladylike qualities, class, self controlled happiness, quiet laughter and polite clapping"... Yet when I smell it, all I can think of is thrown underwear and stolen illicit moments, with all the raunchiness of a sleazy affair! ... In a good way!

  • INGRID05/16/2003

Sophisticated, classic floral with hidden sensual depths.

  • INGRID05/16/2003

Sophisticated, classic floral with hidden sensual depths.

  • MURKI05/14/2003

Bought Mom the parfum, last time she had it was when Dad bought it for her in Paris on their honeymoon. Almost regal scent.

  • SALI04/27/2003

I've read that Marilyn Monroe wore it, and whether it's true or not, Joy to me is the ultimate glamour perfume--mostly French jasmine and Bulgarian rose, so if you want a floral that's bold and rich yet sweetly feminine, one that feels light due to lack of a heavy base, this should qualify. Joy is beyond a classic; it's the perfume against which all others are measured because it's not only ravishing but it's so unique, it's simply unmistakable and unforgettable. I wear this in parfum and I pray they never stop making this.

  • ELLIZA04/01/2003

when i first tried this, i was expecting something very different and was disappointed. i expected clear rose, or jasmine, and that isn't what you get. it also smelled faintly like the scent used for a common brand of toilet paper, which it might well be (manufacturers crib scents from the WIERDEST places for their products!). i still don't really smell individual flowers in it. but i tried it again, and after a couple of tries, i suddenly found i loved it. it has become one of my staple fragrances -- good value in that it LASTS in all formulations (but GHASTLY expensive - shop around for this), very rich and floral with a cinnamon heart. a real classic, always appropriate.

  • ANNA03/26/2003

I have no sense of smell but I love to wear perfume to judge its effect on other people. When I wear JOY nearly everyone I meet says "Mmmmm, you smell gorgeous" - so this is not just one person's opinion but hundreds!

  • LOLA02/02/2003

Tip on the Joy bath line: the body lotion is just OK, but the cream is incredible!

  • MARYMAGS01/30/2003

I know what you mean lola, joy turns musky and warm on my skin. It is dark and alluring.

  • TAMMY01/16/2003

This is the most beautiful scent in the world. When I wear it I feel like a million bucks!

  • NIKKI12/11/2002

I have heard of Joy for years and finally got the chance to smell it. It smells terrible! Far too strong and medicinal smelling! Just over the top with the floral combos! How this became a classic is beyond me...

  • BETH12/03/2002

Bulgarian roses and Grasse jasmine - how can you get any better?

  • JACQUELINE12/02/2002

I finally got to smell the parfum. I must say I am disapointed. It smells like something a teenager should wear if it weren't so valuable. It is sweet yet boring.

  • APHRAEL11/18/2002

Not much of an update, actually.I mean,Joy is very, very nice, but at this time I am still reeling from an unbelievable weekend, and my emotions are still so raw there is no way in hell for me to put anything into words...yet.All I can say, right now,is I understand my sisters point on this fragrance,I just have to wait a bit so I can phrase the whole experience in a way that would make sense.Later.

  • APHRAEL11/13/2002

Frankly, when one of my sisters wears Joy,it weirds me out.It does, because the scent is so intimate, lush, wet, heady and...well,to smell THIS flotting in the air is like the feeling of having just buried my face in her bedsheets,so you can understand the uneasiness,here... And if THAT wasn't enough, there she comes, flushed and tousled, smiling like an idiot without a care in the world, pretty much with the details of her whole night printed on her face!! On top of it,the weather today is wet, wet, wet, the air is heavy with mist and the promise of more rain, and that seems to carry the scent everywhere...And on the leather coach, lies sleepy eyed Lola, drinking a bathtub full of coffee, wearing nothing but her husband's old T.shirt while HE bellows "it's a beautiful life" from the shower... Well, that's it: I HAVE to find out what this is all about. So,after too much time spent resisting it,I have decided to try it,too. But not at home.I have reserved the honeymoon suite at the Westin, and this weekend,me and the love of my life will be...unavailable.Of course,if the Joy magic is so good that I too, decide to become a regular user, this whole house is going to become a very interesting place...Thank God this house has 3 separate wings! (Hey,my sisters and I adore each other, but we are also very territorial and fiercely protective of our privacy) I'll keep you guys posted, about the perfume ,I mean....I think I'm getting a much clearer idea as to why Maya only wears Joy when Lola and I are out of the house...

  • LOLA11/09/2002

...My habit of switching fragrances at the drop of a hat will get me in big doodoo! For whatever reason, I decided to try the new Donna Karan (Black Cashmere) and...Got a rash,a headache, heart palpitations and...passed out cold on the floor! When I came to,it was all I could do to drag myself to the shower, where I decided to use the one totally opposite scent to Black Cashmere that I now of: Joy. And sure enough, the headache went away, my pulse went back to normal, and the rash showed hurried signs of disappearing. But,wow, what a weird moment that was! But THEN,my husband came to give me a hug, smelled the Joy on me (litterally), and the rest is none of your buziness. So,as it is so often the case, the choice between a new, trendy fragrance and a classic, timeless, time tested and yes,OLD!!!! scent,is quite easy. I had not planned on so much action, this evening, but,I'm wearing Joy,and to not come up with the goods when my husband is so receptive to it is a torture that I am not willing to put him through...Tough,job,but somebody's gotta do it,and Damn it, it'd better be me.

  • KATHLEEN10/13/2002

Joy...Pretty...Smells like a bouquet of Roses...Makes me feel like a Princess when I spray Joy...

  • KATHLEEN10/08/2002

Joy...Pretty! Makes me feel like a Princess! Joy has Bulgarian Roses and Jasmine...heavenly!

  • MAYA10/01/2002

So the bossy old sis ratted us out!! (hey, she is 3 and a half minutes older than me,& 7 minutes older than Aphrael) O.K.So about Joy: I could never, ever pull this one off in the summer, because on me,it takes on a deep, dark, hormonal, animalic note that is just too much. In hot weather it looses its magic and becomes cloying. But as soon as november rolls around,however... It turns intimate to the point of rudeness. The kind of smell one would expect emanating from behind closed doors, not out in the open. To me it's just so human and private it has this boudoir like quality, this "femaleness" about it that makes it an intensely emotional experience. It's not for everyone. And to all those who rate Joy as "old",and fit only for old grandmas,I can only say that if your grandmother wore this, she must have been a wiiiiiiild thing in the sack and her social life must have been quite a trip! And because of society's constraints back then, she probably had no choice but to conceel her true self from the general population, which would make such a woman all the more interesting. You should talk to her more.Joy is a charnel, erotic scent cleverly disguised as a good girl scent.Enjoy!

  • LOLA09/30/2002

Actually,if you like reading creative posts, you should check out Maya and Aphrael, they are my sisters, (we're a set of triplets),they love perfume as much as I do,and the family resemblance definitely comes through in the writing!

  • LOLA09/30/2002

Hi!Thanks for your message!I got to learn about perfume from my way cool grandma who worked in the french perfume industry her whole life, and I discovered the joy of writing after an accident left me in the hospital for 13 months. It's nice to see that someone out there enjoys the end results.I must say, I am having a total blast with this site,I get to combine both passions! See you on other perfume boards!

  • BETHANY09/28/2002

Hi Lola, you must be a fun person to know in real life :-) I LOVED your quirky, imaginative description of this perfume. Made me see it in a whole different light ;-). I hope you are in the writing profession or that your talents are being properly utilized. Thanks for the romantic/erotic short story :-)

  • LOLA09/17/2002

With me,this fragrance is bipolar. If I smell it right out of the bottle,or sprayed on a card,it is a "good girl scent",fit for a young lady who would never do anything wrong, knows her place, doesn't swear and won't even think of dating until after her debutante ball and only with her parents'approval. But if I go ahead and put Joy on,(the pure perfume and only on bare skin),I always get in all sorts of trouble, because...After about an hour,(yes, the dry-down takes that long),the natural oils from the perfume bond with my chemistry and the resulting concoction takes on a life of its own with a vengeance!! It starts smelling sultry, heady and really, really dark. In a good way.The kind of smell one might detect in the bedroom of a woman who's been incredibly bad all night long.Picture,if you can, a huge eighteenth century stone mansion on the outskirts of Paris,a large bedroom with floor to ceiling windows,a gigantic four poster bed surrounded by sheer, gauzy veils, redwood floors, full length mirrors... Now,picture the woman:She is not one of those skinny waifs with no substance, she is strong, curvy and voluptuous. Her hair is long, wavy and full,(any color you want!),and at the time completely tangled. Her skin is creamy and flushed in all the right places, she just said goodbye to her lover('til next time, that is),and is getting ready to tend to herself in the privacy of her marble bathroom. The reason why I love perfume so much,is because each scent gives me the ability to picture a different scenario...Of course, when I don't like the fragrance, the fantasy can become quite nightmarish, but that is part of the fun...

  • SUE09/02/2002

I love Joy- Great prices- but before I buy, what does EDT stand for?

  • CHRISTINE M.07/15/2002

Whenever I want to feel good, this is the one that I reach for. This perfume is aptly named. It is a fine fragrance that is actually very light, providing that you know how to wear perfume properly. Do not put a lot on, more is not better. I would never use this as a room spray, it is much too beautiful. To a previous poster:Try Glade honey, please give the remainder of your pefume to people who do appreciate Joy :-)

  • CHERYL06/24/2002

I bought this because I had read that it was Vivien Leigh's favorite fragrance. I thought "How can such a classy actress go wrong?" BUT it's too strong. WAY too rosey. I usually can take a strong perfume but this was over the top. You might be able convince me to try to Joy light. I was so disappointed.

  • CHANTELL06/11/2002

    Wonderful smell. Simply lovely.

  • BETHANY06/06/2002

This is a wonderful example of a fragrance that has deservedly stood the test of time. Joy is a great scent in my book-fresh,young-smelling,cheery,sweet but without that artificial floral smell. Good stuff!!!

  • CYNTHIA06/03/2002

I only have this in perfume, so it is very strong, but is such a gentle fragrance, it smells lovely. The smell reminds me of a fresh clean soap, and I smell like I just took a long leisurely bath. This sets a mindset of cleanliness and is quite pleasing. It is soft enough to wear day or evening, and in teh summer as well.

  • CARLA04/02/2002

well of course, only jasmine of what is it. Makes me nauseas.I always wash it off when I've tried it. it is not bad, just not for me

  • MIRANDA03/10/2002

I'm not sure how much of a difference there is between EDT and true perfume...I have the tiny black bottle with the red stopper(not a spray) and it is absolutely fabulous. It is not over powering, floral but not to inspire a head ache. No wonder it's a classic!

  • AMY C02/04/2002

One of my favorites. Lovely and cheering, neither too sharp or too sweet or too heavy. I know it's recommended for evening, but I love wearing Joy on the weekend with jeans and a T-shirt. Lasts a long time, and a little goes a long way.

  • NADIA01/29/2002

this fragrance is very "blonde" (like me :) )..In your face, bright and fairly strong yet sweet...the florals are gorgeous in this but smelling it all day might be annoying. For me, I need a scent that is more mysterious ans sublime...try "ombre rose" girls your man will never leave the bed!

  • DEIRDRA01/28/2002

I have used this product for mire years than I care to remember, nothing else is close to it in my book. However, it is getting harder to find every year. The internet is now the only place I can buy Joy. Its classic and timeless, very feminine and sexy.

  • ANDROMEDA01/20/2002

It's a little strong so you have to be light with it but once it touches your skin, it's all diamonds and pearls.

  • JACQUELYN12/31/2001

Joy is purely elegant. It is distinctly ladylike and beautiful. Use lightly, too much of a good thing~isn't!

  • AIMEE12/19/2001

It's like laying in a field of hay, weeds, and grass. :\

  • KATHI O.12/03/2001

This is the absolute best-smelling scent. I am sensitive to perfumes, but I can wear Joy all day with no ill effects to myself.

  • AL11/29/2001

I love the smell of Roses and jasmine together but my problem is everytime I use Joy, I get itchy wherever I dab it on so guess I have to give any Joy a miss.

  • CHRINSTINA11/24/2001

When I smell this perfume, I felt no joy. It is like a pot of medicine. It is terrible.

  • I am unable to find Joy dusting powder anywhere and my 82 year-old mom wants some. Where can I find it?

  • EMMA DAVIDSON11/08/2001

There has never been and never will be a more beautiful perfume than Joy. It is a joy to wear it. It makes me feel beautiful!

  • MAR10/21/2001

I love it! It stays with you. It takes 10,000 flowers to make an ounce of this precious perfume. It is worth it.

  • EVONE09/29/2001

I have no Joy when I where this perfume. I don't know what all the hoopla is over it. It smells like a million roses to me, and I feel like a smell like an old lady.

  • JOLENE09/28/2001

Joy is a pleasant, sweet floral. The name is very fitting. It smells classy and elegant to me.

  • NONI09/09/2001

TONIGHT I CRACKED OPEN A NEW BOX OF BD BY YSL, INSTANT HEADACHE . ALWAYS KEEP A BOTTLE OF JOY AROUND FOR TIMES LIKE THIS AND KEEP ON STEPPING.

  • CONNIE08/17/2001

When I was just a young girl, I babysat for a doctor's wife and he bought her nothing but JOY. I would experiment with her purfume and fell in love with the scent. When I told her that I had been sneaking her Joy, she bought me my first bottle. Have loved it ever since.

  • NURSE PEBBLES08/04/2001

I love florals very much..but for some reason,I could not connect with this scent....it seemed to have a rather "ragweed" scent to me

  • SAL BONO07/09/2001

I have purchased Joy for my wife during our entire marriage . we have been married for 34 years . I can smell her across the room when she is wearing the scent . It's the scent I prefer and I have given her many classics and it's always my first choice . It's perfect .

  • IVANNA LT07/03/2001

"JOY" was the first Parfum I ever wore given to me by my mother and re-discovered again by me after my marriage I'll pass it on to my daughters when they marry and to my granddaughters when are born.......It is a constant reminder that WOMAN is GOD's GIFT to the WORLD......

  • SANDY MILLER04/20/2001

The peaceful fragrance of Joy takes me places I've only dreamed. I have always used Joy. I always will, for there is no other for me. The memories are oh so sweet and pure and her lingering fragrance last all through the day and in my dreams at night. There is only ONE JOY! You must try her to understand her power.

  • MILLER03/22/2001

This fragrance is oh so wonderful. If I could only wear one perfume for the rest of my life. I would pick this one. The scent of Joy lingers in the air and makes me feel good all day. I love it. You will too!!!

  • HILLARY02/16/2001

As far as I can remember my mother has always worn JOY perfume. In the morning after she was all prepared to leave for work she would stop and give me the biggest most wonderful hugs. Her scent on those mornings is just unforgetable and I will always treasure the scent of Joy perfume. I'm actually on my way to France tonight and I have promised myself I will find a bottle of Joy perfume there for my mother on mothers day (the day I return)

  • DEB11/21/2000

I admit to something of a bias in favor of floral fragrances, but it is easy to understand why this fragrance has stood the test of time. It is distinctive, go ahead and indulge.
