    nice smell to have

  • MANDY 07/11/2012

Bought it was a gift. Just like I remembered it from many years ago.

  • AL DONALDSON01/11/2012

    have not recieved this product

  • MILES06/06/2010

This is an update from my earlier message regarding the re-packaging of Tsar. Though it is now packaged again in a dark green bottle, the bottle is slightly different from the original in that the marble designe is not featured. And although the new version smells fine, it's lacking something in sillage and longevity. I always go for the original whenever it's available, but to each his own. Tsar is an exquisite blend, I'm just happy they haven't discontinued it, as many companies don't appreciate their classics.

  • MAGNA11/18/2008

I get frequent comments from women when I wear Tsar. Too bad VC&A had such weak marketing behind an excellent fragrance.

  • KC10/15/2008

If you go to the Van Cleef & Arpels website you'll see that since 2007 they went back to the original bottle which is dark green.

  • MARK05/09/2008

I ran out of the original Tsar EDT years ago and yes, the new packaging and formula is definitely not the same. It is certainly dependent on the individual's body chemistry but this particular fregrance works for me and I consistanty receive complements when I wear it; not to strong but just right ... for me. Anyway, I was shocked to see that The Perfume Emporium was actaully advertising some original TSAR in the "Dark Green Marble Bottle" so I immediately stock piled a supply. THANK-YOU!!!

  • MILES02/13/2008

I just wanted to clear up the confusion in regards to the repackaging of Tsar. The original dark green marble bottle is no longer made - they repackaged it in a ribbed light green bottle. It's smells almost the same, but not exactly. The frosted bottle that Chris B. speaks of in a prior message is an entirely different fragrance - it is called "eau de Tsar" and is much lighter and fresher. I'm with most of you, however, and I think the original is far superior.

  • DALE12/18/2007

OK, I've been wearing Tsar(Original) in the dark green faux marble bottles, Cologne, After Shave and Shaving Balm for years. A few years back they changed to a clear, ribbed type bottle. What I've found is that the shaving balm is so hard to find, I've had to stock up on it from the Van Cleef store in Chicago on our yearly visit there. Question: has the balm been discontinued or production limited to certain locales? as I've not been able to get it anywhere, even in Chicago this past year...although they said they were just out. This is the most excellent man cologne in the world, sophisticated and elegant and I've never met a woman who did not appreciate it, where can I find the shaving Balm? It's the most soothing and refreshing for my skin condition and I hate to live without it. Thanks.

  • GREGG12/04/2007

i am so dissapointed with the new tsar, it is not as good as the old one. and i dont think i will be buying anymor

  • CHRIS B.08/05/2007

Those of you who are having a hard time getting the original Tsar Eau de Toilette, you're buying the incorrect item because no one that I can see advertises it correctly! The ONLY Eau de Toilette comes in a DARK GREEN BOTTLE and is 3.3 oz. The new bottle you speak of is the update of their Eau de Cologne or Cologne. The Cologne bottle has always been clear or frosted looking. If you don't see a picture of that dark green bottle, it's not what you wanted and the difference in scent, between the Toilette and Cologne is like night and day. I love the Toilette and abhor the Cologne!

  • PATTI12/22/2006

I just bought my husband a bottle of Tsar in the new transparent bottle. It it definitely different and I am really disappointed. He has worn this cologne for the last 13 years, and I was expecting to get the same great fragrance. It is OK, but not the same scent that reminds me so much of him. I'm very sad!!!

  • WIRRAL GUY12/03/2006

This smells like sex in a bottle-awesome stuff!! It has the most mindblowing dry down of any fragrance i have ever used-lasts forever-i can still smell this 2 days after i have spritzed it!! It has a very pungent odour-which for some reason women are drawn to!! I put this fragrance up alongside escada pour homme, and ungaro 111!! LONG MAY TSAR REIGN!!!!!

  • SPARKY09/21/2006

I recently bought a bottle of TSAR; Gold cap, light green transparent bottle. It may be me but the fragrance seems ony similar to what I remember; dont't know if ingredients have deteriorated, if manufacturing has replaced natural ingrediants with synthetic or if the formula changed. I suspect if it not me, and it could be, it is probably about saving money. It is not as bright and prominent or lasting as what I remember.

  • JOE08/08/2006

This is my favorite overall cologne to wear. It was recommended by a girl to buy a long time ago to me. I always receive compliments from ladies, when i wear it. The scent of this cologne goes great with my own body chemistry. Most people forget to go with scents that agree with their own bodies, not every type of scent goes for everyone!!!

  • ART HISTORIAN06/08/2006

I have a clear green bottle some claim to be the new one. But I think it´s the other way round. Since I have a distinct memory from 1990 or 91 that the clear bottle was the original one. The one showed in the picture here is identical in design to Van Cleef & Arpel´s bottle for their older cologne Pour Homme. I think they decided to put Tsar in that bottle as well to save money. The same bottle is also used for Eau du Tsar so that would make sense.

  • SUSAN06/04/2006

My husband has always used Tsar and he smells SO good! He always gets compliments. I always spray it on a pillow case for me if he's going out of town. But, we did notice that when Tsar began to appear in the light green clear bottle that the strength of the cologne is very much weaker. It doesn't last nearly as long. What's up with that?? But we love it.

  • JCAMIR05/23/2006

THE GREATEST MEN AND WOMEN LIKE IT. ALWAYS ACOMPAINMENTS

  • JIMMIE05/05/2006

Tsar is mild and not offensive at all. It's well balanced because there's some citric freshness within the heavier leather and moss. It lasts very well and leaves a great smell on clothes. Eau du Tsar is excellent for summer.

  • MARCO FROM CHILE04/21/2006

I am 27 years old and I have bunchs of perfumes. This one is excellent, well, ya....its Van Cleef, one of the most exclusives jewerly brands. This perfume is a jewel as well, but i recomend it for a guy of 40 to 50, married, with kids, etc for a daytime use. A classical fragance, for classical people...

  • ART HISTORIAN04/03/2006

Tsar is a calm and dignified scent. It doesn´t speak very much but the longer it lasts the finer it gets. And it is long lasting indeed. Somewhat chaotic in the beginning, like a new head on the throne. It will conquer you slowly...

  • WIRANA, THE ALCHEMIST12/17/2005

My comments here refers to Tsar that came in the green box-shaped bottle with the gold cap - not the one shown here. When the salesgirl sprayed my wrist with it, the floral and spicy fragrance turned out sweet and salty. Okay but not classy enough. However, after a while, and especially if you put more than the recommended dosage which is a squirt, it turns out to be a headache like the sort tsars would have when their regimes disintegrate, as the oakmoss patchouli and sandalwood fight for dominance over your fragile aura. And it seems the battle rages forever! The smell is longlasting which should be the way but unfortunately this eau de toilette reminds me of the unmistakable air that barber shops and hairdressing salons generate from within. What I want to know is what REAL women really think of this product as I have no idea why that salesgirl thinks it's great other than that she's desperately trying to clear the shelves of it so that the shop will not attract tsars with mullets!

  • TONY T11/23/2005

you gotta be at least 30 for this to work.i don't know to put it but i will say it's a bit 2 masculine and an older guy's scent. i like it but will pass.

  • MARIO JUSTINIANI07/29/2005

Too obvious. Yes it's masculine but formulaic. Way too 1980's--Arnold R had a good point about Drakkar Noir. :) Compare it to a 'refined ' (i.e;weak) popular scent like Gendarme, for example--which was invented for people with allergies to cologne (!) You'll be top dog. No question. But there are far better. If you really like sophisticated , elegant scents may I suggest you check out the Creeds? While you're at it you might try L'homme by Versace for business, Givenchy Gentleman for formal occasions and The Baron for romantic evenings? However if you think that Grey Flannel and Acqua di Gio are also great, ignore everything I've just said. (sigh)

  • HIGGIBABY04/13/2005

When I was in college (early 90s) an extremely attractive female friend recommended Tsar to me. I wore it for many years to great success and just bought it again. For some reason this scent consistenly gets solid feedback from females. I'm not sure if it's the "freshness" of the scent or what. After I put it on this morning my wife said (as we kissed before I left for work) "That's great cologne you're wearing. What is it? Is it new?" This is a scent for someone who is confident in themselves and where they are in life and don't have to be riding the latest & greatest trend. Others I find to be uniquely excellent: Creed Green Irish Tweed, Issey Miyake Pour Homme (original), Essenza di Zegna and Pasha by Cartier.

  • JAVIER11/29/2004

I own about 30 colognes, but this is the one that gets me the compliments EVERY TIME!! Smells so good, the BEST cologne EVER!!

  • JULIE10/13/2004

LAST YEAR, I BOUGHT TSAR BY VAN CLEEF AND ARPELS FOR MY ROOMMATE, AND IT WAS IN A CLEAR GREEN BOTTLE INSTEAD OF THE ONE PICTURED HERE. ...ANYWAY, I GAVE HIM A SAMPLE ONCE, AND HE LOVED IT SO MUCH THAT I GOT HIM A BOTTLE FOR CHRISTMAS. IN FACT HE WAS SO CRAZY ABOUT THE SMELL THAT HE COVERED HIMSELF WITH IT EVERY DAY... WHETHER IT WAS FOR WORK OR GOING TO THE BAR TO IMPRESS THE WOMEN. WELL, HE HAS A GIRLFRIEND NOW... HMMM, WAS IT THE TSAR??

  • STEVE07/24/2004

Of all the colognes I've ever worn this stuff consistently gets me compliments. My absolute favorite fragrance. Lssts forever. Fairly strong so don't put on too much.

  • PINOMEX05/13/2004

This is one of the first in my collection. People allways ask what I do for a living when I wear this one.

  • ELLIE04/14/2004

Liked the scent so much I asked him what he was wearing, want to get some to put on my pillow, to remind me of him.

  • NORA11/28/2003

I agree with Tina. A very pleasant scent, it is special...Now it is in a new bottle.

  • TINA11/16/2003

I love it when my husband wears Tsar. It's the only scent I will buy for him. My 12-year old son likes it so much, he asked for it for Christmas. It's clean smelling, subtle, and very sexy

  • PATRICK SMALL10/25/2003

Obviously fragrances smell different depending on one's body chemistry. I first discovered Tsar when a friend brought it back from Paris in 1989. It is one of two that I still wear (the other being "Instinct" by Les Floralies available only in New Zealand). At the height of my collection, I had perhaps 40 or 50 different colognes (including Drakkar). Tsar is indeed the one for me. Try the after shave balm if you can find it. The synergy of the EDT and AS balm is just incredible. As for comparisons, there is nothing like it. It bears absolutely NO resemblance to Drakkar...on me.

  • DEBBIE08/21/2003

I have recently discovered Tsar. From a women's point of view, my husband smells wonderful when wearing it. My son wore it one day and his girlfriend said she couldn't stop leaning in to smell him, as a matter of fact she told my youngest son to wear it - he would have all the girls swooning. It's clean smelling - like you just showered, not strong where the smell enters the room before he does. You wonder - is it cologne he's wearing or did he just shower. With all others you know its cologne, it hits you like a ton of bricks, Tsar is wonderful

  • JUSTIN08/03/2003

I got a sample of this one abroad,& i must admit that it's a classy aroma, very subtle. This one's a keeper for me.

  • ARNOLD R.03/05/2003

It smells like the guys at Van Cleef & Arpels were sitting around saying, "For 1989, let's come out with a nearly exact copy of Drakkar Noir. We'll make it slightly spicier, and we'll make it with all the finest ingredients, but it will smell almost exactly like Drakkar Noir -- only no one will ever realize what we've done because we're a hoighty-toighty establishment, and no one will want to admit that we've ripped off Guy Laroche's signature scent from 7 years ago! Bwahaahaahaa..." Or something like that. Not that that's bad, if you like Drakkar Noir. I'm just saying. I think it oughta' be mentioned; it's weird how none of the reviews I've seen even mention this. Not one. I think it's pretty much a dead ringer for Drakkar. I mean, it's slightly, microscopically different, but they're at least fraternal fragrance twins, if not identical fragrance twins. So, if you like Drakkar Noir, I guess you'll like Tsar! (That should've been the commercial jingle for the stuff.)

  • MARIN S12/25/2002

    Tsar is the best!

  • GERT HOLLAND11/25/2002

I KNOW. One of the Axe's fragrances smells exactly the same! CHECK OUT! Therfore a Z-

  • GERT HOLLAND11/25/2002

This perfume reminds me a lot of my dad, and even my grandda. It's a too musky scent. It's also far too conservative. I'm damn sure that you can buy cheap deo's of this scent. Scent is TOO regocnizable

  • HARRY10/15/2002

    A waste of alcohol

  • CHRIS10/14/2002

    This aphyxiated my cat!

  • MIKE P05/02/2002

The women love it.I've been wearing it for 10 years with no negative reaction

  • OLGA04/12/2002

It is the perfume of my beloved man.

  • PIERRE03/18/2002

Subtle, caused a rather aggressive (positive)reaction from a wonderfull female colleague at work. A favorite and indeed a winner!

  • VALENTINA12/31/2001

Tsar was a very good men's fragrance and I liked it a lot. As I can see it is not very popular any more and that's a pitty!

  • WILEY12/18/2001

I have wore this brand for 12 years, can't find anything else that I like.

  • DAN12/15/2001

Pure unbridled class. Great for a night around town and/or formal Evening. I had a mini of this gem but am now going for a 3.4.

  • MILES11/27/2001

In my opinion, one of the best men's fragrances ever made. Ladies love it because it's very rich and sensous. It's a perfect blend of fresh notes, with undertones of deep woods and spice. Very elegant, distinct and manly. Girls literally stopped and asked what fragrance I was wearing. An absolute shame some stores have stopped carrying it.

  • KRISTINA SMITH10/30/2001

when i first met my husband 7yrs. ago he was wearing this product.that is one thing i fell in love with was his smell.we are very disappointed to here it has been discontinued.we enjoy that colonge over all items out in the market today.

  • TROY04/23/2001

i've been using TSAR for years and recently heard it's being discontinued....my disapointment is monumental!

  • ROBERT KALLINICOS01/19/2001
