The whimsical scent, called Elixir des Merveilles (French for Water of Wonders) has been described as surprising, refreshing and magical. Elixir des Merveilles perfume has notes that include elemi, bitter orange, Italian lemon, Indonesian pepper and pink pepper. There's also what the house calls an "ambergris accord," plus woody notes, including oak, cedar, vetiver, balsam of Peru and tears of Siam. Unlike most fragrances, which traditionally only reveal woody and ambery notes at their base, Eau des Merveilles' are noticeable throughout. And it has almost no floral notes - a rarity in a women's scent. Serge Mansau designed Elixir des Merveilles' orange bottle to invite play, like a toy. It is rounded, save for three flat planes - two on its bottom and one on its back, so the flacon can be set down slanting right or left, or laid flat and used as a magnifying glass. Eau des Merveilles' outer box, created at Hermes, is like a theater showcasing the scent. It also is meant to resemble a secret drawer.

I absolutely love this fragrance. It isn't too flowery or too musky. It is just right!!

I remember smelling this on a passer by a few years back and she was so startled when I pursued her to find out what it was. I have bought 3 bottles since. I love the freshness of it, it's not floral. I find it quite a sexy scent, and while it has a masculine kick to it, I absolutely love it. And so does everyone I know. I sprayed some EDP last night, and I can still smell it this morning, and it smells better the longer its on. A real lingerer. Fantastic.

this one is an absolutely beautiful haunting classic kinda fragrance ! infact i tried this one n mistook it for the eau which is an edt n posted a review there instead. i love the concentrated essence of this eau de parfum n it merges with the body to form a unique and very sensual n personal fragrance !!

I think this perfume would be deliciously perfect on a man after about 1/2 an hour. Women who wear woodier scents well would probably also like this one. For me the woods notes stand out & I typically love them, but find this one too heavy to wear. My sinuses behind my eyebrows hurt. The complexity & uniqueness are nice but it just hits so hard all at first. longevity is good but does not leave me craving more. Not an average scent but the pro's and cons balance each other making me give it a 3.

Elixir des Merveilles is centered around ambergris with supporting notes of orange and cocoa.. it's uniquely woody and gourmand simultaneously. Works on guys as well as girls and lasts forever on this skin. Excellent fragrance from Hermes

If you're looking for something unique in the sea of fruity florals out there, this stands out. I like the original, too, but the elixir is deeper and more sensual, and the bitter orange note is very appealing and remains throughout the life of the scent. A winner!

A friend recommended this as something different. She sprayed a little on me and I've got to say it's really nice! It's very sexy. I'd wear this on an evening out - not at work. There's also something a bit masculine about it too but all in all it gets the thumbs up from me!

What an incredible scent this Elixir is, but I have to ask, why on Earth did they design the sprayer like this? Am I the only person who has inadvertently sprayed the bottle simply by handling it? Mine has such a quick trigger that just placing the bottle down I've ended up squirting it by accident. At first I thought the darn thing was leaking as I had perfume all over my hands. Then I realized what was happening, so now I am very careful. Guess that's why the product comes with a little clear sleeve over the sprayer? Honestly, it must just be me that I detest this kind of packaging. Omnia, Omnia Crystalline and several others in my collection do this too and I have mistakenly sprayed them all just picking them up, or rearranging them in the drawer. I don't find this kind of sprayer clever. To me, the company is trying to save money not giving us a proper cap, and I resent it. This is not cheap perfume, and I don't want to waste a drop of it!

My oh my, this is dangerous! Thank you Rosaria for introducing me to this magical potion! Reminds me a bit of Angel at the onset, without the heaviness of patchouli. There is a slight licorice note to my nose which is pleasing, not overdone. Magical is a good word for this fragrance. And interestingly, it doesn't change on me with time, as other scents do with the base notes becoming more prominent as the hours go by. This one seems to be consistent on me from beginning to end. I truly love it, and if you like warm, complex, spicy scents you will likely also enjoy Elixir.

I smelled this when it first came out. To me, it smelled like orange soda. Orange-y & effervescent, (with chocolate undertones) but it was pleasant, if you like to smell like that. I didn't like Eau des Merveilles, either, but that doesn't mean it's not good. I don't seem to like an orange smell in scents, or any citrus for that matter, so I guess those two are out, but at least they're not flowery.

  • JUDI W*03/02/2008

I only sampled it twice, but to me, ORANGE SODA. Really, it was orangey & fizzy smelling, not good-not bad. (with a tinge of chocolate)

  • BARBARA W02/16/2008

I like this EDP (the original is an EDT). It's richer and lasts longer. Try it if you find the original too light.

Could someone please explain the difference between the elixir and eau versions of this fragrance?

  • HSC12/23/2007

I wanted a new scent and the saleswoman asked me what scents in the past I had and liked. I remembered "Mystere" by the House of Rochas as one choice. She looked in a book on all scents of all time and told me that I was attracted to Oriental woodsy/spicy. She directed me towards this one and from the moment I tried it, I really liked it. My husband likes it too. It's a bit androgenous, which I find sexy and ... multilayered and complex, which I really am drawn to. I don't like one dimensional scents- I like to smell many components of the perfume. I think I can really smell the chocolate and the orange in it.

  • DEBBIE12/06/2007

I have never had a scent that I like more than elixir des merveilles by Hermes. It is my mother's favorite scent as well and we both hope to wear only this fragrance for the rest of our lives.

  • VC10/18/2007

This is unlike many of the new gourmand scents out there - this one is very alluring and spicy and sexy and has excellent staying power. I frequently get compliments from both males and females. Excellent choice for winter although I tend to reach for this one year round!
