Hi everyone - I'm interested in sampling Shanghai, but wondering which version you have all tried - EDT or EDP? I've seen the EDT on sale, but usually prefer EDP concentration in my perfumes. Thanks!

Love it love it love it! Bares a stricking resemblance to Coco and Vintage Soul combined. Long lasting. Does anyone know if there is lotion, powder or a shower gel ?

  • VONNIE10/31/2007

After reading everyone's posts I can't wait to try this one out. I haven't smelled it either, but the name of the fragrance sparked my attention. I'm a perfume junkie for life.

  • PERFUME-AHOLIC05/16/2006

or is this one strikingly similar to Coco by Chanel? I've just tried a small sample of the coco and right away to me, it bears a strong resemblence.

  • PERFUME-AHOLIC05/09/2006

Much appreciation to you positive posters out there who raved about this fragrance enough to make me purchase it without smelling first. Got it today, and just LOVE IT. Beautiful unique bottle as well. A proud new addition to my rapidly increasing collection.

Darn, Maya, I'd forgotten that Perfume Emporium lists Shanghai, or I would've gotten back to you much sooner! Sorry 'bout that. If I haven't mentioned before that I really enjoy your posts and get TONS of useful hints from them, here's my chance to tell you! We've got lots of overlap, too, in terms of what we fall in love with. Lizzzie, as you know, is a great source, too. By this time, you may well have already discovered Shanghai for yourself, but if Christmas was busy and you haven't gotten around to it, PLEASE let me put in a shameless plug for it!!! It's one of the fragrances I own that I simply CRAVE. I just read your last post and had a chance to look at your stash list, and I think Shanghai might be a great missing link! It's different than anything you've got, and yet you've got the nose that would appreciate it. You like rich fragrances as well as fresh and fruity, and Shanghai is a lovely bridge between the two. I'd say it was leaning towards the fresh and fruity; imagine Venezia with the deeper sweetness and sultriness of Amor Amor, through in a little more fruit, and that gets you as close as words can. It's not at all spicy, yet with the plum and osmanthus there is a little something that's similarly bright. As far as Euphoria goes, I can completely understand that you would not want to smell like every hall at the university, a-waft with students drenched in the stuff. That said, to me, anyway, it's so wonderful that I actually don't CARE about its popularity! It's really that good. It's much different than Shanghai -- the fruit is deeper, darker, the wood is more pronounced, the drydown is creamy and earthy -- and I see you like Prada, and so that neo-classic structure is something you already appreciate. It's definitely light years beyond Calvin Klein's usual stuff. Another one you might like is Escada Signature with the green juice; again, it's got fruit, sweetness and wood in lovely proportions, and it's highly original. Of course, you might hate it! Aren't noses the most maddeningly unpredictable things??? Hope you'll update me on the Shanghai/Euphoria front when you have a spare moment.

"Shanghai , The forbidden Fragrance. Floral, Spicy & Exotic. Shanghai is eclectic, beautiful, multifaceted and mysterious. Shanghai opens with sparkling nuances of Bergamot and juicy Green Apple. Touches of Cinnamon Oil Ceylon add a glow of energy and spiciness. The Magnolia Flower, native to tropical Asia adds a fresh citrus floral to the Top Note. The ancient Chinese Osmanthus Flower with its fruity-floral apricot aroma is one of the signature notes. It has Carnation, Jasmine and Patchouli. The drydown is warm Vanilla Bourbon, rich Balsam Woods and velvety Ambergris. Further enhancing the warmth of the base notes is Wild Plum, a smooth, luscious fruit native to China."

You are SO welcome, Maya! Ditto about reading YOUR posts (both yours and Robin's)... we have similar taste, and you two have such a FLAIR in your descriptions that I ALWAYS look for your posts first! if you recommend it, then i trust your noses! thank you to you, too! :-D

  • MAYA12/06/2005

Oh you are just wonderful. Thank you for your enthusiasm and your friendly and very kind advise. I love reading your posts and really appreciate your answers. You and Robin are the best :) I will just have to get Shanghai unsniffed since I know that both you and Robin have excellent taste in fragrances :) Many thanks, Maya

  • LIZZIE12/02/2005

i do think euphoria is very different from shanghai... euphoria is much more woody and creamy. shanghai has more blasts of fruit. i love both... and own both! and even if every man, woman, and child is wearing it, if you enjoy it, then your nose will be happy, and all is well with the world!!! shanghai, i would say, has a BIT of amor amor, only with a richer, more voluptuous, ASIAN flavor. you'll love it... give it a sniff!!!

  • LIZZIE12/02/2005

this perfume is SO GOOD, i can hardly stand it. it's warm, velvety, luscious, with that delicious plum coming through and the apricot-y osmanthus flower i SO adore in fragrances like Sui Love and Sake, by Fresh. this is a DELECTABLE floriental that grabs all that is good from every category and ripens into the most wonderful, full-bodied mystery. i know it sounds silly, but pair this fragrance with a super-sexy cheongsam dress, and you could slay men with your hot self!!! it is not overpowering, just spicy and exotic enough... trust me, give this thing a sniff, and you'll see exactly what i mean!!!! I LOVE SHANGHAI!!!

  • CLARISSA 11/05/2005

Hi, Robin, I totally agree with you. It doesn’t smell oriental at all thought it actually is. I would say it is a very fruity and floral perfume with only a subtle hind of oriental, not in any way links with our conventional thoughts about oriental. I also agree that the new CK euphoria smells very similar to this one but I love this one better. I think the smell of Shanghai develops in a way more exquisite than Euphoria. Because of this, I don’t think I need to obtain Euphoria because I would think it is just an inferior copy of this extraordinary perfume. However, I really feel sorry for Shanghai because she is so little known in my country. Sad~

  • MAYA11/02/2005

Thank you for all your wonderful suggestions and advise... always a pleasure to read you. I was wondering if Shanghai is at all reminiscent of Euphoria since you mention it here... I have tried Euphoria and do like it, but I know that in the next two months if not already just about every other woman/girl will probably be wearing it. I work at a university so 'new' fragrances that are launched recently make a huge impression on younger girls at school - hence the elevators, hallways, classrooms and offices tend to smell somewhat similar... right now Fantasy is a big one... and I do see Euphoria making it's way. I was at a perfume counter yesterday and two women were asking the lady at the counter for Euphoria... Do like the name though, and the bottle shape is pretty cool although the 100ml bottle is a bit awkward to hold. OK now back to Shanghai, could you at all suggest any similars so I have a better idea of what it actually smells like. I really love orientals, but do enjoy semi-orientals as well as woods as well - in fact I do enjoy a pretty wide variety, but here are some of my favorites... Deep Night (Ghost), Aimez Moi (Caron), Burberry London and Burberry Brit Red, Casmir (Chopard), Paul Smith London (Paul Smith),Connexion (Lancome), Deci Dela, (Nina Ricci), Nirmala (Molinard), Mauboussin (Mauboussin), Nu (YSL), Presence (Mont Blanc), Ruby Lips (Dali), Samsara (Guerlain), Venezia (Laura Biagiotti), Pink Sugar (Aquolina), Trouble and Initial (Boucheron), Prada the new pink one (Prada), Omnia (Bvlgari).... yeah the list goes on... so in your expert ;) do you think I'd like Shanghai?

  • ROBIN 10/08/2005

Hi again. Yes, I wasn't very accurate last post about Shanghai; I'd said it wasn't an oriental, but technically, of course, it is. What I meant to say, in my clumsy way, was that it wasn't a heavy, obvious, spicy scent such as Opium; that it was much fresher, sparkliery, more floral. Anyway, just don't want to steer anybody wrong by goofing up a bit in trying to make a point. Hope you love it as much as I do. (Also, have you tried the new Calvin Klein, Euphoria? Wow, it's nice.)

  • ROBIN 09/14/2005

I mean, with the name you'd think it would be a heavy, spicy oriental, but it's not AT ALL. It's so refreshing, blossomy, plummy, with something extra that really sets it apart without being too way-out there. Here's what I found on the web to help you: (PS. I ADORE it!!!!!!) Description: "Shanghai opens with sparkling nuances of Bergamot and juicy Green Apple. Beautiful scent, and not overwhelming! Love it.

  • PERFUME JUNKIE08/07/2005

Hubby gave me this for Xmas (on my very un-subtle hints). I love it, as I am an oriental-scent fan. Good staying power, too. A nice, sophisticated perfume. I get lost of compliments.

  • TRACY09/20/2004

This scent is farely new and only sold at Saks 5th Avenue in NY. I love it and have been using it everyday since it was purchased. It is reminiscent of ANGEL but not the same...
