My husband loves this fragrance, doesn't want to be without it. I always keep it on hand for him, I enjoy the scent, very nice, not overpowering.

  • TBM02/11/2013

If you can find any, get it. This is one of the greatest colognes ever made in my opinion.

  • M.E.08/13/2012

Great classic cologne for the confident man.

  • MICHAEL 05/15/2011

First night I went out wearing it, a gorgeous lady grabbed me as I passed her by sitting at the bar. She stated she loved the smell and wanted it near her all night long. I sat with her until closing after which I accompained her back to her place and bodda boom bodda bing....it truly works, drives them crazy.

  • TRENTON09/29/2009

I like to put Opium on a couple of hours before I go out because once it settles, it becomes amazing. Goes on pretty strong. A dab on top of each shoulder spread to each side of the neck is enough for me. A classy mature man's fragrance...not for kids.

  • ASIAN07/14/2009

Simply, it is one of the best. it is a must to have in your collection

  • SWAYZE, MO02/11/2009

Current literature states that this men's classic was introduced in the mid nineties! ... that is inaccurate. The Yve saint Lauraint introduced its original opium pour homme in 1977. It did really have true opium extract in it. It generated a riot in the late seventies. It was really one of the greatest master pieces of the old man YSL. in the mid ninenties, under pressure, the opium extract was dropped, and the formula was redesigned to resemble the original scent as best possible out of legal essences. The result was another classic masterpiece allbbeit, not with real opium extract. It is heavy for evening wear, but a masterpiece it still is. Highly, highly recommended.

  • JUDE C09/24/2008

This may be the strongest, longest lasting scent on the male market. I mean this stuff jumps out of the bottle, a very cool one by the way, like a cannon. The plastic sprayer, which I normally hate, works great. This is an absolutely delightful scent that can be over applied if not careful. The best oriental of them all, sexy and classic all in one. Nothing to really compare it too, but, as always, ysl delivers on this one big time. A timeless and legendary treasure, which all must experience. Somewhat, somewhat, trendy, but not as much as many others.

  • BARBARA W08/17/2008

Not crazy about this for the first hour or so, but it dries down to a very sexy scent indeed. I love spicy orientals on men, and this is one of the better ones.

  • GUY04/13/2008

One of my top 5 fragrances. Warm, spicy, long lasting! You want compliments from the ladies, get this. I'll return to buy this again and again.

  • LOU03/22/2008

I first tried this absolute classic a few years ago and love it! Spicy but not stale, sweet, not bitter. The comparison to ladies Opium is there is erroneous. There is no similary at all. Why this liquid gem is not in greater distribution may be to YSLs benefit. It has become my personal secret.

  • MUSTAFA12/29/2007

THE CREATING OPIUM POUR HOMME MUST BE SO HARD. CAUSE OPIUM IS A LEGEND. OPIUM POUR HOMME IS SOUR AND SWEET, MODERN OR CLASSIC, PERSONAL AND SOCIAL. NOWADAYS I THINK OPIUM POUR HOMME IS A LEGEND TOO.

  • KMF08/29/2007

Good, but not great. Starts out quite strong, even harsh. Very nice drydown. It's an enjoyable fragrance, just nothing terribly groundbreaking or original. If you a fan of oriental scents that last forever, look no further...

  • DARRSHAN06/10/2007

one of the best fragrancefrom the house of ysl, just awesome.

  • GUY 06/03/2007

YSL has a tradition in my family for creating signatures that stand out ahead of the competition. This spicy, long lasting classic deserves to be revisited by its detractors. The opening notes are a little strange, but from there, ginger, hot pepper and vanilla blend like no other giving this a new definition of "oriental" for men. It is the one perfume I can almost taste! Ladies take note...

  • RYAN03/28/2007

I know all the reviews here have raved about the EDP version. I had previously bought the EDT version (the only one I could find in Minneapolis) and found out I couldn't wear it after I tried it out a couple times. The top notes had a very medicine like quality that took a good hour or two to disperse. The drydown was very nice, but the time it took to get to the dry down was a little too much for me. I had to go exchange the EDT at the store I purchased it at for something different. However, my question is, does the EDP have the same medicinal smell that the EDT does?? I know for a fact the women's Opium EDT and EDP are so very different they seem like two different fragrances to me. Anyone, please help answer my question. If the EDP doesn't have the sharp medicine like qualities, I would gladly order the EDP.

  • LE NEZ03/28/2007

A rich and luscious combination if ginger, vanilla, patchouli among others that become very sweet as the hours wear on. I do stress a lasting power here. 6 to 8 hours at most! This is not your grandfather's old spice...

  • MR DV-803/23/2007

This is an all time favorite. Opium is for the guy with mystique and class...like myself. One very good thing is that a lot of guys don't wear this, so I automatically stand out when I wear it. If you want to fit in then don't bother getting any.

  • EYE SPY03/11/2007

This smells like something James Bond would wear. It's unique and long lasting. Smoothe yet rugged. It's definately a man's cologne. Best worn in cooler weather and/or at night. One of my all time favorites and I highly recommend it.

  • AUDIE SIEGEL02/26/2007

Opium for Men has been my signature fragrace for many years now. It is great! It is masculine, but not overpoweringly masculine. It is fresh and clean smelling and very "spicy." It is guranteed to "Spice UP your life!" It has mine for quite a while now. I recommend it with many, many thumbs up and 5 stars!

  • RICHARD 02/05/2007

This review is for the limited edition: Much more dramatic than the original scent that I like from the start. This one has synthetic notes that I dont like . Drydown is fine, but beware of that first wiff. Not a keeper, but not bad...

  • ALFIE01/02/2007

This fragrance is so mysterious. I tried it yesterday and I think this fragrance is different with others. The scent is unique but not weired so oriental and mysterious.

  • MR. MALONE12/03/2006

Opium EDT is a great cologne for evening wear. A little goes a long way. The fragrance will last at least 16 hours on my skin. This is probably the strongest EDT I've ever come across.

  • BLACK LIGHT10/25/2006

Opium is one edt fragrance. Put a dab on your wrists and that's plenty. With its woodsy/spicey fragrance, it smells very masculine. Opium is very classy and best suited for evening wear.

  • TONY T10/12/2006

but reminds me of toothpaste initially and a fresher smelling jaipur. by that i mean more manly and masculine maybe due to the pepper and a bit less refined than jaipur. excellent scent but not my cup of tea.

  • RYAN T08/03/2006

This cologne is not a really horrible scent, but when I put it on, it reminds me of how a fig newton smells. Maybe there is a note of fig in there. I have worn this on and off. To be fair, I will say that the first application is consistant with its drydown. Another benefit is it will last you all day without being overpowering. I will give this cologne a 3 star rating just to be fair.

  • M.R.04/14/2006

YSL's signature scent is this elegant spicy/woody fragrance that smells very high class and is remeniscent of Boucheron PH and Jaipur.

  • CHRIS03/25/2006

Dos the EDP version lass alot longer than the EDT version? Can I get the EDP version in a big bottle? if so, my email address is [email protected]

  • JERRY01/21/2006

After reading the reviews I just bought the EDP version of Opium for men. Wow! This is a superlative oriental scent, indeed! The EDT version does not smell the same as this. One tiny squirt is all that should be used. It's powerful, rich, warm, exotic, and long lasting as any perfume should be. If you are tired of the current "clean, crisp" fragrances like Aqua DG, Cool Water, and the like, then this warm oriental fragrance is a wonderful option change. This scent shouldn't be worn by a man under 30-35 years of age in my opinion. It's definately not a trendy, youthful-oriented fragrance. Since Cartier killed the classic original Santos fragrance I wanted to find another oriental fragrance, and so I have found it!

  • RMJ01/03/2006

Hmm, this one is great IMO. It's really what i picture an oriental to smell like. When i first sprayed it i noticed that the scent dispersed to my nose quicker than any other fragrance i have used, indicating good sillage. At first it may seem a bit strong and spicy/woody, but let it dry and it develops and warms and gets great with just a hair of sweetness to make intoxicating (it doesn't overdo the sweet note like some orientals). It is truly a rich classy masculine fragrance. I would recommend it for evening/formal wear. I've only used the Eau de Toilette version, but i'm looking forward to trying the Eau de Parfum version soon.

  • RICHARD12/27/2005

I really like this classy and "new" scent! It is masculine and not too bold! Very sensuous and sexy. I knew YSL can still produce quality.

  • DB709/27/2005

I have the EDT versions, but I have to say that there is a substantial difference between the EDT and EDP version. The EDP version is much richer and stronger yet not over done. Next time I will buy the EDP. An advice from my experience: if there is an EDP version for a scent you like, GO FOR IT and forget the EDT version. Thrust me.

  • MR. LONGROVE09/20/2005

Opium is a very nice and elegant fragrance. I don't recommend wearing it to work or casually. Opium is definately for formal and evening wear. It's also very strong, so be careful not to over do it! A little will go a long way.

  • RN09/08/2005

This stuff is addictive. It' unique, lasts long and has a really mysterious smell, that you can't find in any other cologne. I've never sampled anything quite as unique.

  • MARIO JUSTINIANI06/28/2005

"Nice" is about all I get from this one. Guess what? It is. But for my money there's a dozen oriental /spice fragrances for men that are far better---Signature, to name just one. I think the appeal comes from, once again, women who have been punched in the nose with Curve, Le Male, Joop and so forth in the same way their moms were punched with Aramis, Brut or English Leather. Whereas Opium for men is hard to overdo. ---it can be done, mind you, but it takes a real kind of tasteless talent to do it--- Same reason why John Varvatos is so popular these days. Unlike JV, Opium for men is truly elegant and vintage '95--hardly a 'timeless classic' though many of us may have been born after that. The real 'timeless classic' is the superb, original Opium (for women), vintage '77 and something no wicked, decadent girl should be without. (sigh)

  • R.J.05/19/2005

IT'S TOTALLY TOP SHELF IN THE YSL LINE OF FRAGRANCES NEXT TO BODY KOUROS. A PERMANENT KEEPER IN MY COLLECTION.

  • HUGGIE05/17/2005

I'M SURE YOUR GIRL R.J. LOVES THE SCENT BECAUSE YOU TWO ARE ONE IN THE SAME. CLEARLY A CASE OF NARCISSUS COMPLEX. OPIUM'S GREAT BY THE WAY FOLKS!

  • W.B.04/28/2005

OPIUM IS DEFINTIELY MY DRUG OF CHOICE FOR THAT SPECIAL ROMANTIC HIGH FOR ME AND MY LADY!!!!

  • PEPE LE PEW12/24/2004

Started wearing this as an alternate cologne. Yes I'm a little late catching on to this scent but then again I'm no longer in my 20's and loud hear me roar club scents aren't my calling card anymore. Nice and sexy scent. Recommend.

  • MR. SNIFF12/14/2004

Why not make Opium EDP available from this site? I'd buy some. So far I've only tried Opium EDT which isn't bad at all...a nice fragrance. But I'd like to try the EDP version, since it's getting such rave reviews. At least a small sample bottle.

  • MICHAEL08/05/2004

Simply put, a very fine fragrance.

  • SYLVIE05/26/2004

Oh my God! This is really a *b*r*e*a*t*h*t*a*k*i*n*g* oriental fragrance!!! It lasts forever and ever. The hottest oriental stuff I know!!! Use it with a verrrrry light hand and wear it at your own risk!! It knocks you out! The power of this Eau de Parfum-version is unbelievable. If you like "Cool Water": STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SYLVIE05/18/2004

Hi Friends! Thanks a lot for the information, that there is a great difference between OPIUM EDT and EDP(!) for men. I compared both and it's true. The Eau de Parfum Version for men is much better than the Eau de Toilette. It's not only stronger - it's another composition. Very sensual, warm and spicy. Very sexy and long-lasting. GREAT fragrance. Very important to know the difference. Thanks again.

  • TOMMY. A.04/13/2004

Exciting scent - not many like it out there!. Sweet, exotic and warm. Not for everyone, but very nice if it fits. I like it best in the evening. Gonna buy me a EDP now.

  • MARIO C CHAVEZ03/14/2004

I have had a difficult time finding the "Parfum" type. I bought the EDT (Toilette) by mistake once and it does not last very long as wit the "Parfum" type. I think a lot of men have bought the EDT instead of the EDP and they are quite different not only on the lasting time but as the scent as well.

  • PAUL01/27/2004

Both masculine and sensual; sharp-strong-long-lasting; everything you need for a special time.

  • JACOPO08/29/2003

I adore Opium, also for her. I recieved many compliments by my girlfriends!

  • CHRIS COLOGNE08/08/2003

Love this stuff. Reminds me a bit of Envy with a strong Tobacco note. Interesting that a fragrance can be both smoky and sweet but thats how pipe tobacco is and this reminds me slightly of that. Can't wait to try Kouros and Body Kouros. --a 30 year old males opinion

  • JOHN04/29/2003

It's a fantastic scent of orients. It lets a sweet smell on your skin.Prefer the eau de parfum edition.it's stronger!Don't forget it's Ricky's Martin favourite fragrance

  • HOMER FROM CHIOS04/29/2003

It's the most magnetic perfume I 've ever smelt.I prefer the eau de parfum edition.

  • ARNOLD R.03/12/2003

And I thought Kouros smelled like a**. This stuff is even worse -- smells like Jade East. It has this ghastly note in it that smells like... decay, or something. Cigarette butts? If you must have an Oriental fragrance, for God's sake get yourself some Lagerfeld (Karl Lagerfeld 1978). That stuff blows this dragon pi** off the face of the earth. I can't believe anyone would want to smell like this. Ah well, to each his own... no matter how disgusting.

  • CHARLES B03/08/2003

Opium is #1 on my hit parade. People like the way I smell when I'm wearing Opium.

  • INDYBRAT02/09/2003

Wonderful scent, very difficult to find the refills for the 1.6 oz :-( Are they even still making Opium for Men????

  • DEANO12/30/2002

Fantastic scent! Reasonably long lasting. My absolute favorite!

  • JIL11/28/2002

I just want to get up so close to a man wearing this. wow..its like light blend of sweet and deep spice. darn I wish the womans version smelled so good!

  • STEVE11/21/2002

SINCE RATING OPIUM FOR MEN LAST DECEMBER, I'VE HAD MORE COMPLEMENTS THAN I EXPECTED. MY SECRETARY, WHO RARELY HAS AN OPINION ON ANYTHING SAID OUT OF THE CLEAR BLUE SKY THAT THE FRAGRANCE I WS WEARING WAS VERY GOOD. ALSO, WHILE DONATING BLOOD A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE PHLEBOTOMIST (THE WORKER WHO DRAWS BLOOD SAMPLES) HAD HER NOSE IN THE AIR. SHE WANTED TO KNOW WHAT THE SCENT WAS THAT SHE WAS SMELLING. WHEN I ASKED HER IF THE SMELL WAS STRONGER WHEN SHE APPROACHED ME, SHE SAID IT WAS. I TOLD HER WHAT I WAS WEARING, AND SHE SAID IT SMELLED LIKE FENDI (WHATEVER THAT ONE SMELLS LIKE). SHE WANTED TO BUY SOME FOR HER HUSBAND. DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS.

  • LOLA10/23/2002

That is one dangerous scent! I mean I could get into a whole lot of trouble for/because of a man who 'd wear that...

  • MICHAEL10/01/2002

i think that this perfume is unique.only the eau de parfum edition.

  • YANG09/30/2002

    too strong.

  • ANNIE09/13/2002

It smells wonderful on him. I wouldn't have thought he'd favor an oriental fragrance as he's a very clean-cut athletic type, no jewelry but a watch, classic, simple style - but he likes Opium. This stuff smells luscious. And, fortunately, he has a light hand with it so he doesn't absolutely reek of it. He puts on just enough so that you smell it when you get close, and keep wanting to get closer...yum. :-)

  • JAMES09/02/2002

I love Opium pour homme EDT and use the 1.6 oz. refill. It last and last and is the absolute best cologne I have ever used. I get endless compliments on it. Too bad it is nearly impossible to find since YSL was sold to Gucci. None of our local stores carry the line any more. It is getting more and more difficult to find online, as well. It is worth it though, the scent is amazing and good for day or evening wear. It starts out a bit strong but gets very soft and romantic after a few hours. If you haven't already, try it!

  • CHARLES08/24/2002

This perfume is unique.I adore it.I prefer the eau de parfum edition because it´s pretier than the eau de toilette.

nice scant for gays. i've smelled womens fragrances more man like than this

  • GIANFRANCO03/27/2002

This csent is trully unique and long lasting. It is not a teeny bopper designer fragrance ( you know the clones). This fragrance is good for every occasion, however don't use the eau de parfum during the daytime apply it for an evening but not to much. Enjoy Gianfranco

  • TUM03/26/2002

Too strong for me. You must be careful when you spray it. Someone really hate it.

  • SUSAN02/23/2002

Prefacing my opinion of Opium for men, I need to say that each body chemistry changes a perfume, so test it first guys. That being said, I have rarely found a more beautiful, irresistable scent on a man. It is balanced in spice, wood, sweet, and musk-like tones. It ages well and holds on all day. Office wear is just fine if 1)you put it on l-i-g-h-t-l-y and 2) you KNOW that you're not going to set someones allergies off. 3)the commenter that said he put it on below the knees had the right idea...I would think putting it on behind the knees would work perfect. The woody part of the fragrance reminds me of the sweet-pheromone-type smell that is exuded by a man that has been chopping wood in the fresh air. There are sweet pheromones and yukky pheromones... The spicey part is "yummy". It is the transporting element. The mellow-sweetness is "relaxing", and the semi-musky note may be the man himself, or perhaps it is the perfume that nudges that aroma forward...but that smell magnetically enhances the whole male reality. It is beautiful, sexy, handsome, strong, mature, and balanced. It is subtle too, thankfully, as too many men, not endowed with olfactory ability, have purchased cheap perfume, and splased so much on that 1)my nose burns, 2) it is gross and offensive 3) and not haveing aged for at least 30 min before getting in the elevator -ugh- have made me really sorry that I didn't take the stairs 4)and I could barely tolerate the stuff if it were put on with a toothpick. Overall, when a man demonstrates he can get the subtle things done well, it is promising that he has alot of other important characteristics mastered...and not just "under his belt"...He is thinking....He might have character...He can handle the day and the night... Now all this can't be purchased in a perfume, but it is certainly in the right direction. This is one case of getting what you pay for. Forget the variety store stuff and educate yourself at the counter of store that most likely also has well fitting pants and shirts that have beautiful fabric. Go to a good beautician, and be virutous. (You know... kind, thoughtful, fair, creative, determined, gentle, strong...the virtues!) The combination is absolutely irresistable if you are at least a semi-healthy woman. The "real man" is truely a beautiful creation. Same goes for gal's in their own way. The more roses in the garden of life, the better. Wish us all luck!

  • STEVE12/22/2001

FOR MANY YEARS, DRAKKAR NOIR HAS SERVED ME WELL. IT HAS A VERY WOODY, LAVENDER SCENT TO IT. BUT ONE DAY I TOOK HOME A SAMPLE OF OPIUM EDT AND HAVEN'T TURNED BACK. PLEASE DON'T MISUNDERSTAND ME. I STILL ENJOY DRAKKAR NOIR ESPECIALLY IF MY COMPANY IS PREDOMINATELY MALE. DRAKKAR NOIR IS ALSO POPULAR WITH TEENAGE BOYS. BUT WHEN I'M IN MIXED COMPANY AND I'M WEARING OPIUM, THIS ONE GETS THE COMPLEMENTS AND THE LADIES' HEADS TURNING. I USE THE EAU DE PARFUM AND I NEVER APPLY IT ABOVE THE KNEES. OPIUM HAS A VERY COMPLEX, SMOOTH BASE NOTE TOO, WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT WHEN HOURS HAVE ELAPSED AFTER APPLICATION. YVES ST. LAURENT HAS A WINNER.

  • VIKI09/17/2001

Very nice, for strong men only. For man with charisma and character! I like it (my husband uses it). If you want to try another great perfume, try Rochas-Men. It's the best, and all women/girls I know ADORE it and are crazy about it.

  • DAVID09/16/2001

Opium is a very different from the hundreds of other fragrances for men. Most men's fragrances are very similar to each other -- either a "musk" type or "leather" type (or a mix of the two). Opium is like Oriental spice; warm, subtle, and not at all over-powering. It's a good daytime-at-the-office scent, but it is also warm and romantic for an "evening on the town." I really like it. It's a bit "pricey," but it's worth the money, in my opinion...

  • MGARIS09/01/2001

Sexy, long lasting, a little bit effeminate for me, but still worth a try. Powdery drydown . . . will definitely get you some comments, one way or the other.
